AMES Space Science & Astrobiology Strategic Plan YIR – Preview • Purpose of Retreat: • To revisit the “living” Division Strategic Plan (2018) • Assess Success / Challenges • Revise Division Capabilities — Add/Subtract • Align capabilities with Agency Needs • (Not stop PI independent research) • Key Objectives: • Provide efficient and congenial Division • common goals, cross-cutting, mentorship, … • Offer direction and focus to Division Mgtw/ implications  NASA ARC Senior Mgt; NASA HQ • Ensure stable, long-term support and funding • (A rising tide lifts all boats)

AMES Space Science & Astrobiology Strategic Plan YIR – Preview 2018/19 Tiger Teams = ARC Core Capabilities Planet Modeling (5) Planetary Systems (9) Exoplanet Characterization (10) Radiative Transfer Research (6) Laboratory Astrophysics / Astrochemistry (9) Analog Research & Instrument Development (18) Astrobiology: The Origin, Evolution, and Detection of Life (11) Division Administration, Support, Hiring, and Challenges (5) (New) Observational Astrophysics / Mission Participation / Instrument Development (3) Team Membership _is not_ by Code SS Mgt Selection, *but by scientists’ participationS* Participation in Team Work and Retreat is 100% Voluntary

Due: 21 Feb 2019 by 3 PM – send to Mojgan Draft: 5 slide team presentation (use the template provided) Will help to define afternoon agenda at retreat. 2. Due: 27 Feb 2019 NLT noon – send to Mojgan Final Team 5-slide presentations (use the template provided) To be used for team presentation at retreat. Each team will give a 15-minute slide presentation in the morning of the retreat. 3. Due: 7 March 2019 by COB – send to Mojgan Final 3-5 page update of the 2018 Strategic Plan Capabilities (or new capability) (use the template provided)

AMES Space Science & Astrobiology Strategic Plan YIR – Preview 2018 Retreat questionnaire responses (only 21 replies so far) Answers are favorable in the areas of “Helped set priorities for the Division” “Defined the Division and ARC role within the Agency” “Encouraged cross-cutting work within the Division and across the Center” The responses show discouragement when the staff was asked about “New opportunities for work and funding” “Improving staff morale” Strategic Planning involves risk and shakes up the status quo. It takes time to be effective and is not always comfortable. Throughout the process, we strive to be inclusive, transparent, and equitable.

AMES Space Science & Astrobiology Strategic Plan YIR – Preview Approximate retreat agenda 9 AM - Coffee (depends on funding) Team 5-slide Presentations, 15 minutes each ~2.5-3 hours with a break Noon – Lunch, Not Provided 1 PM to 2:30 PM – Group work – participants will be divided into small groups (6-8/group) Discussion Capability mapping to Agency Needs 2:30-2:45 Break, coffee (depends on funding) 2:45-4:15 PM Groups will merge to enable cross-fertilization and commonalities to be noted 4:15 PM – 5:15 Report out - from teams

Retreat / Afternoon priorities that you have?
