When did they build it? • The Spanish people started building it in 1724 • The soldiers gave the Alamo its name and it means “cottonwood”
After Mexico became independent from Spain they occupied the Alamo
Texas was a part of Mexico although Texas did not want to be.
In 1835 Texan people occupied the Alamo as part of the Texan Revolution. • The government of Mexico did not like this and in 1936 about 6,000 Mexican soldiers came to take it back.
The battle of the Alamo • There were 6,000 Mexican soldiers against 200 Texan soldiers in the battle from February 23 to March 6, 1836. • The soldiers held out for 13 days on the 14th day they lost against Mexico
Why is the battle so important? • Because the Texan people held out for 13 days and they believed in themselves. That year they declared themselves independent.
