  2. Four Course Meal: An Introduction In a four-course meal, four parts of the food are served one after another. The four-course meal generally comprises of an appetiser, a soup, main course, and dessert. Each course is designed with great detail with reference to the portion size to fit its place in the sequence. Often it is observed that a four-course meal includes elements that are served individually in meals that have more courses. Four Course Meal Dining Table Setting In a four-course meal, table settings can be elaborate. From a more formal setting to a regular one, there can be a variety of them. Basically, all the utensils, cutlery, and glassware are placed at the table. The outermost tools are used for the courses appearing earliest and the innermost are used for dishes appearing at the last. So, the diners use the cutlery starting from the outermost. However, if you are in doubt, follow the lead of the host.

  3. Alternatively, only those tools are placed in the setting that fit the course. As the meal progresses, and new courses arrive, new tools are placed, and the older ones are removed. This scheme of arrangement is also suitable for the meal that has different dishes in each course. For instance, each soup, depending on how thick or creamy it is, has its own unique spoon. It would be impractical to lay all the spoons on one seat. Therefore, to avoid the clutter on the dining table, this alternative setting can be used for four course meal.
