  2. The Journalist • What does he do? • His role in society? The above points are important in understanding before any writing is to take place

  3. The Journalist • Gets information from everywhere • Is objective – write for the general public • Write what people want to read • Gives accurate news or information • Not about brainwashing • Must not mislead • Give genuine news

  4. Good or Bad? • News can be good or bad • Honest • Clear • Not exaggerated

  5. Grammar and Style • Grammar is important • Journalist style of English • Clarity and Concision • Clear sentences • Verbs, adjectives etc.

  6. Proofreading and Editing • Must not ignore these two and know the difference • What is clarity? • Avoid misleading • Eliminate your mistakes

  7. Newsworthy • Recognise what makes a piece of writing newsworthy • Differentiate the characteristics known as the 8 factors

  8. Types of News Stories • accidents/disasters • obituaries • Crime • Courts • Sports • Business • Government and Education

  9. Questions • Each type of story has its own set of questions • Choose the correct style • Open ended or closed ended? • Also relevant for personal research

  10. Methods of Gathering Information • How do Journalists gather information? • Important for personal research and your final presentation for this course • Through observation, interviews, background research and internet

  11. Hard News • What exactly is the hard news? • Murder, crime and disasters • Soft News/Feature • Entertainment, human interest • Editorial • Highly opinionated

  12. Legal and Ethics • What does Legal mean? • What does Ethics mean? • Invasion of Privacy • Taboo topics? • Culture • Nature of Audience E.g. Princess Diana

  13. Headlines • Need to be catchy • Attractive • Effective • Make use of nouns, verbs and adjectives • Not misleading, but can let reader guess

  14. Presentation • For your final project you are expected to present short piece of news to the class. You will be practicing throughout the course in class and in the computer labs. • This is done in week 15 (5 min)

  15. Class exercise • In groups of no more than 3 do the following exercise: • Write the word ‘MURDER’ in the middle of your page. • Now write all the relevant words that you would use if you were to write a story on the topic.

  16. MURDER At approximately 9pm last night, eyewitnesses reported seeing a young man walk into a house with a gun. The victim in the house was Ms Smith, the famous Artist. Ms Smith’s body was found in the kitchen after what investigators say was a rape case. A large knife and gun was found beside the victim. The young man’s motive is unclear, but witnesses believe he is either a member of a dangerous gang or even a serial killer. Members of the local community are furious and demand justice for Ms Smith’s suffering and death. Police have announced that there is no indication of robbery or anything being stolen.

  18. ATTENTION • SPELLINGS • GRAMMAR • VOCABULARY • Remember to always use strong, relevant and clear words. • Avoid being ambiguous • If giving opinions, be aware of the facts!
