  3. Making the students comfortable... In the beginning, students may get OVERWHELMED! • “How do I start?” • “Where are the assignments?” • “Who is my teacher?” • “Where is my textbook?” • “What are my deadlines?”

  4. We want you to feel ready to answer all their questions!

  5. Logging into Blackboard...

  6. The student’s user name is his/her email address The student’s password is his/her birth date in the format ‘mmddyyyy’

  7. Now that I'm logged in... Where Do I Start???

  8. "My Home" Screen... Have the students click on the name of their course.

  9. Now, you see this... Within this area will be announcements…starting with the most recently posted!

  10. Before they click on anything else...

  11. DO THE COURSE INTRODUCTION! • Teaches navigation of Blackboard! • Includes 3 activities which are combined for a GRADE! • THE STUDENTS OFTEN SKIP IT COMPLETELY!

  16. Steps to take for technical issues... If the Course Introduction page will not show: 1. Press the “Tech Help” link • Go to Class.Com Support Site; Contact LF • http://support.class.com 2. The Lab Facilitator contacts the Site Coordinator 3. Site Coordinator contacts Debi Crabtree (HCVS) 4. Debi recommends remote support

  19. Back to the Course Intro... The 3 activities will look like this. They are all placed within the pages of the introduction.

  20. Remember... 99% of all Navigation starts by selecting one of the links within this circle! Always check for announcements!

  22. Upon completion of the introduction... We want the student to feel better about our virtual world! We want them to be able to say: “I can so do this!”

  23. When is my work due???

  24. Due Dates for Assignments... A “Pacing Guide / Schedule” will be developed for the students They will be directed to this schedule within one of their first announcements! Pacing Guide Tasks Calendar

  30. The student needs... • Paper and pencil in front of him/her! • A calculator • A willingness to email questions! • PATIENCE, PATIENCE, PATIENCE!

  31. The "CONTENT" comes first! Step 1: Select the Unit in which they are working

  32. OPEN THE TEXTBOOK! This is the “textbook”; make sure the students select this BEFORE they open up assignments!

  34. Steps to take for technical issues... Follow these steps when content pages will not open: 1. Press the “Tech Help” link • Go to Class.Com Support Site; Contact LF • http://support.class.com 2.   36. If I click on the Unit tab, a drop down box appears for easy navigation!

  37. Back & Forth a lot! Within the pages, the student will be instructed to go back to the Unit module and access quizzes, assignments, tests, & discussion boards! “Unit Module”

  38. OOPS! If the student opens up a quiz, exam, or assignment BEFORE they are ready to take it... He/she will be locked out and will not be able to re-open it!

  39. OOPS! If the student opens up a quiz, then hits the “back” button, tries to go back into “content”, or tries to go to “send email”... He/she will be locked out and will not be able to re-open it!

  40. Then, this happens... The next time the student tries to access the assignment, this message will appear! Only the teacher can re-set the assignment when this happens!

  41. A UNIT is complete when... The student is not finished with a unit until ALL content is reviewed, he/she participates in the discussion board for that unit, the quizzes are completed, the unit assignment is completed, and the unit exam is completed.

  42. A few more small details... to add to your EXPERTISE!

  43. Discussion Boards Step 2: Click on the title of the discussion board in which you want to participate. Step 1: Choose “Discussion Board”

  44. Discussion boards foster student-to-student interaction as well as student-to-teacher interaction. The students will receive grades on their participation in the discussion boards!

  45. Create student folder... Being organized is EXTREMELY important! Have the student create a folder and place in on the desktop! Make sure to include the student’s name on the folder (example: virtual school j smith)

  46. Email / Dropbox Students may submit a document to the teacher by attaching it to an email or by submitting it through the dropbox. Note: In the Algebra I course, the requirement to submit documents is minimal. The majority of assignments are submitted by selecting “submit” at the bottom of the screen.

  47. Step 1: Create document in word processor (MS Word, etc) Step 2: Choose “File” and “Save As” which will give you this window Step 3: Select student’s folder from desktop Step 4: Name the file Step 5: Choose “Rich Text Format (RTF)” for type

  48. Last step: CHOOSE SAVE! FINAL CHECK Correct folder File Name RTF

  49. EMAIL Step 1: Choosing either “Communication” link will open this page Step 2: Select “Send Email”

  50. Step 3: Check the box by the teacher’s name Step 4: Click on “Add” under the attachments section
