  2. This presentation discusses how NCKU designs and implements the ESP program in order to equip our students with advanced language skills for career and academic development. Purpose

  3. Outline • Need: international exposure & language skills • Current development in English teaching: EGP, ESP, EOP, and EAP • Top benchmark teaching and research centers • Implementation at NCKU: course design, talent recruitment, teaching materials, assessment • Future plans

Benchmark Centers (2) • Aizu University 會津大學,日本本州福島縣 • Nurtures computer science and engineering students who use English as a common language • Establishment of Center for Language Research; hosted Japan Conference on English for Specific Purposes • 37% international faculty; 50% undergraduate courses and 100% graduate courses given in English • Four levels of English courses and a “Thesis Writing and Presentation” course for undergraduate computer science students • Examples of electives: “English Resume Design and Development,”; “Writing for Publication”; “Reporting Statistical Research in English” Aizu Curriculum

ESP in Taiwan • Available courses tend to be ESP in name but CBI (content-based instruction) in nature • Leading universities have explored the possibilities but are unable to launch the program due to resource constraints. • Fooyin University (Kaohsiung County) • Nursing and medical English • Hosts annual symposium on ESP

ESP Course Offerings • English for Occupational Purposes • Phase 1: Opens to students of Liberal Arts and Management • Phase 2: students of science and engineering • Phase 3: students of medicine and life science • Semester-length courses for college juniors • English for Academic Purposes • Pilot program: 3 workshops • Semester-length courses for college sophomores

  12. Current EAP Workshops • Academic Listing (May 2008) • Academic Writing (Sept 2008) • Conference Oral Presentation (Sept 2008) • Semester-length EAP courses will roll out to the University’s undergraduate students

  13. Talent Recruitment • Current instructor profile: dual degrees in linguistics and management • Teacher training workshops for talent development • Certificate programs for ESP teachers

Teaching Materials • Partnership with Bookman Publisher • English for Economics and International Trade • Series with multiple titles (Demand and Supply, Sales and Marketing, Human Resources, and etc) • Case studies with authentic readings • Career English • Addresses practical needs such as resume writing and job interviewing skills • Authentic materials and tasks

  15. Assessment • Partnership with ETS Taiwan • TOEIC tests free of charge • 1000 student participants • Pre-, post-teaching and delayed assessment

  16. Future Plans • Integrate ESP curriculums into NCKU’s regular course offerings • Launch Taiwan ESP Association • Build Taiwan’s first ESP teaching center • Align with international ESP communities
