  2. Start up Welcome! • Please add your email address to the list if you haven’t already. • Buy a book ($24) from Kristi if you haven’t yet. • Take a mirror and rubber band if you would like to use one during class.

  4. Stress Review • What did you find out about word stress patterns in words with suffixes? • –ly, • -ery/-ary • Others? • Other questions, comments, or problems ?

  5. Summary of ‘Rules’ • Stress THE SUFFIX • -ee • -eer • -ese • Stress ONE syllable before the suffix • -ic / -ical • -tion /-sion • -ity • -logy • -graphy • -ian • -ium

  6. Group Practice Stress the syllable just BEFORE the suffix: aTOMicpopuLARity anthroPOLogysatisFACtion Stress the SUFFIX (the last syllable): traiNEEvolunTEERtechNIQUE Don’t stress the prefix (usually): atTRACTpreTENDmisLEAD

  9. Rhythm • Take turns saying these phrases with a partner. • boys and girls • hot or cold • wait for me • going to bed • Did you say them the same or different? • Was the rhythm of your phrases the same? • On which words did you put the stress?

Individual Practice • Get a Stress Practice Handoutand follow the directions. • Get a microphone (and headset if needed). • Plug in your microphone. • Log in to a computer. • Go to the Windows button in the lower left corner of your screen. • Click once. • Click once on ‘All Programs’. • Click once on the ‘Accessories’ folder. • Click once on ‘Sound Recorder.’

Individual Practice (continued) • Press Record. • Say the number and the word or phrase that follows. • Press Stop when you finish. • Save it to your Documents Folder as P-YourName-26 (Example: P-Kristi-26 ). • If you can attach it to an email and send it to me, please do so. If you don’t know how to do that, I will do it for you.

  13. Shadow Talking Practice • Choose a something you would like to listen to. Some examples include: • Voice of America (www.voanews.com/specialenglish) • Ted Talks (www.ted.com/talks) • National Public Radio (www.npr.com, 89.7 FM, 90.7 FM) • Decide if you will just listen and repeat or if you will use the transcript. • Make sure your audio is set up (headphones, microphone, and volume). • If you are going to record, use the Accessory ‘Sound Recorder’ on a pc computer. (See Kristi for help with this.) • When you are ready, press ‘Record’ and then begin your listening. Record yourself repeating what the speaker says immediately after they say it. Pause your listening at any time. • Repeat & have fun!
