  2. About the Professor Ponn Maheswaranathan: B.S (Sri Lanka), M.S & PhD (Purdue University, Indiana). Professor of Physics, Winthrop University. Native of Sri Lanka, Naturalized U.S. citizen. Married (Shyamala, Sri Lankan) and two sons (Rising Senior at Emory and Rising Junior at Duke).

  3. Chapter-1Physics The Fundamental Science • 1 The Scientific Enterprise • 2 The Scope of Physics • 3 The Role of Measurement and Mathematics in Physics • 4 Physics and Everyday Phenomena • How to Use the Features of This Book • Chapter features: Summary, Key Terms, Questions, Exercises, Synthesis problems, home experiments and observations.

  4. Can you explain the formation of a rainbow?

  5. The Scientific Enterprise A scientific meeting, communication, and debate are important to the development of scientific explanations.

  6. Steps in the Scientific Method 1. Observation 2. Formulation of Rules 3. Development of Hypothesis, Theory 4. Testing of the hypothesis or theories by further observation

  7. The case of the malfunctioning coffee pot

  8. Physics Physics is the study of the basic characteristics of matter and its interactions. Physics can be divided into classical physics and modern physics. Classical Physics: Mechanics, Thermodynamics, Electricity and Magnetism, and Optics. Modern Physics: Atomic physics, Nuclear Physics, Particle physics, and Condensed-Matter physics.

  9. Why are measurements so important?

  10. Why study everyday phenomena?

  11. Units: Metric and British

  12. Scientific Notation and Metric Prefixes What is the speed of sound and light? Speed of sound in air (at 200C) = 343 m/s or 767 MPH Speed of light = 299792458 m/s Mean Earth-Sun Distance = 149600000000 m. How much time it take for the sunlight to reach earth?
