Standard – SSUSH 6 The student will analyze the impact of territorial expansion and population growth and the impact of this growth in the early decades of the new nation. • Explain the Northwest Ordinance’s importance in the westward migration of Americans, and on slavery, public education, and the addition of new states. • Describe Jefferson’s diplomacy in obtaining the Louisiana Purchase from France and the territory’s exploration by Lewis and Clark. • Explain the major reasons for the War of 1812 and the war’s significance on the development of a national identity. • Describe the construction of the Erie Canal, the rise of New York City, and the development of the nation’s infrastructure. • Describe the reasons for and importance of the Monroe Doctrine.

  2. Manifest Destiny • Belief that God has destined America to stretch across continent from sea to shining sea • John O’Sullivan coined the term • Idea would be used for American imperialism in the Pacific

  3. Northwest Ordinances Adopt a state plan – method of creating states out of territories Two main Laws – Land Ordinance of 1785 Northwest Ordinance of 1787

  4. Louisiana Purchase • Jefferson bought territory from France • Doubled the size of America • Led to more westward migration of Americans • Led to the decimation of Native American culture

  5. Lewis and Clark • Significantly increase geographical knowledge • Sacajawea crucial to success of Expedition • Encourage westward migration of Americans

  6. War of 1812 • Between US and Britain again • Called the Second War of Independence • Causes – Impressment, British incitement of Indian attacks, War Hawks, US desire for Canada, freedom of the seas

  7. War of 1812 • Results • Increased pride, sense of nationalism • Era of Good Feelings • Andrew Jackson, War Hero, Battle of New Orleans • US building of War ships – USS Constitution

  8. Erie Canal • Greatest engineering feat of the 19th Century • Increase travel and trade between West and East regions of America • Crucial to the development of nationalism

  9. New York City • Because of Erie Canal – NY became economic center of America • Wall Street made NY financial center of world • Ellis Island made US gateway for immigrants to America

  10. Monroe Doctrine • Proclamation by President James Monroe • Forbid any European powers to make new colonies in the Western Hemisphere • Promised US protection of the independence of Latin American nations, newly liberated
