  1. Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince By: J.K. Rowling Presentation by: Alexander Briggs

  2. Main Characters Physical: Harry is of average height and weight. He has unruly, jet black hair and bright green eyes. His most unusual physical attribute is the lightning-bolt shaped scar over his right eyebrow. Harry also wears glasses that are often taped together. Emotional: Harry and is very brave and courageous individual. He is not afraid to stand up for what he thinks is right and would willingly sacrifice himself if it would help others. Despite Harry’s remarkable achievements he almost always remains modest towards his feats. Harry can often be stubborn, thinking he must complete some dangerous task alone even when he doesn’t have to. He puts a lot of responsibility on himself. Harry Potter Relational: Harry has many friends in the wizarding world but none are as close to him as Hermione Granger and Ron Weasley. They have been his best friends since first year and there is seldom a moment when he doesn’t have either by his side. Harry later becomes involved with Ron’s younger sister Ginny. The Weasley family treat Harry like family and in a way are the only family he has ever known. Harry’s only living relatives are his non-magical aunt and uncle and their son, all of whom disrespect and mistreat him. Harry is Dumbledore’s protégée and often goes on adventures with the Headmaster. Harry has many allies including the Order of the Phoenix and the students of Dumbledore’s Army. Harry is close friends with Rubieus Hagrid, the grounds keeper. Harry also becomes the target of Professor Slughorn’s fascination, who wishes to place Harry among his wall of fame of famous students. Harry also has many powerful enemies including his arch-nemesis Lord Voldemort and his following of Death Eaters. Harry and Voldemort have been in battle ever since the day that Harry was born.

  3. Hermione Granger Physical: She is of average size. Hermione has long, curly brown hair and brown eyes. Emotional: Hermione is terrified of failure. This causes some insecurities in her. Because of her intelligence, Hermione almost always knows the answer to any problem that may confront her or her friends. When she cannot find an answer, Hermione will become extremely upset about it. She can also become rather hot-tempered when she is jealous. Relational: Hermione is best friends with Ron and Harry. She is also good friends with Ginny, her closest female friend. Hermione harbors special feelings for Ron, which Harry learns of later in the novel. Hermione’s parents are non-magical dentists and though they find their daughter somewhat strange; they love her all the same. Hermione is close friends with Hagrid. She also greatly respects Dumbledore. Voldemort and his following are her enemies.

  4. Ron Weasley Physical: Ron has the same red hair, freckles and hand-me-down clothes as all his other siblings. Ron has blue eyes. He is taller than Harry and many of his brothers as well. Emotional: Ron is brave and courageous when he the need presents itself. He isn’t afraid to back up a friend in a fight even if he knows he can’t win. Ron can sometimes become extremely nervous and afraid, especially when around spiders. He has been known to be immature and insensitive, which often gets him into trouble with Hermione. Relational: Ron has a very large family. He has four brothers; Fred, George, Bill, and Percy, along with his only sister, Ginny. Ron’s parents, Arthur and Molly, are both very kind and loving. Harry and Hermione are his best friends. By the end of the novel we begin to see that Ron has feelings for Hermione that are hidden very deep inside, feelings he may not yet know he has. Ron is also friends with Hagrid and admires and respects Professor Dumbledore. Ron is enemies with Voldemort and all of his Death Eaters.

  5. Dean Thomas Lavender Brown Teammates Dating Dating siblings Ron Weasley Ginny Weasley Best friends Best friends Teammates Friends Best friends Rivals Harry Potter Hermione Granger Best friends At one point in the novel, major relationships begin to develop between the main characters and other minor characters. This is the culmination of those events. It all starts when Ron and Harry catch Ginny and her boyfriend Dean kissing. Ron and Ginny fight and Ginny says things that cause Ron to become very upset and feel as though he doesn’t have anyone who cares for him. Following this event Harry begins to notice that he has feelings for Ginny that he never knew he had. Ron becomes very bitter towards Hermione because of an old relationship she had, thus making Hermione upset. Harry tries to correct the situation by giving Ron his confidence back and helping him with playing Quidditch. This idea backfires, as Ron then goes out with Lavender Brown instead of making up with Hermione making Hermione even more upset. Ron and Hermione fight back and forth with Harry trying to mend the broken relationship. Hermione tries to get back at Ron by going out with Cormac McLaggen, Ron’s Quidditch rival. That plan quickly backfires. Eventually, after Ron has a near death experience with some poison, Ron unconsciously calls for Hermione instead of his girlfriend while laying doped up in the infirmary. This ends his relationship with Lavender and gives Hermione hope that Ron shares her feelings for him. Dating Cormac McLaggen These events cause the characters of this novel to develope new feelings for one another, which ends up having a great impact on the rest of the story line.

  6. Film Cast I picked Emma Watson to play as Hermione Granger in this film because she has already acted in all the other Potter films and I couldn’t imagine her being replaced by anyone else. She fits the personality of Hermione very well and also matches her physical characteristics. I have chosen Rupert Grint to play Ron Weasley because he matches Ron’s physical description perfectly and also has the acting ability to pull off Ron’s personality. He has done a great job in all the Harry Potter films and I couldn’t imagine anyone else playing Ron. I chose Daniel Radcliffe to play Harry Potter because he has already played Harry in the past five films and has demonstrated a great ability to portray Harry’s character. He also matches Harry’s physical description remarkably well.

  7. I chose Alan Rickman to act as Severus Snape because he shares the same slender and sleek attributes as Snape. He has also portrayed Snape extremely well in all of the other films. I have chosen Michael Gambon as the actor to play Dumbledore because he resembles the character to a great extent (minus beard). He has also played Albus in the past 3 films and brings a new kind of flare to the role. I picked Tom Felton to play Draco Malfoy because he is exactly how I would picture Malfoy in my head. He has also played Draco in all the other films and portrays his personality quite effectively.

  8. Writing Style Harry’s scream of horror never left him; silent and unmoving, he was forced to watch as Dumbledore was blasted into the air: for a split second he seemed to hang suspended beneath the shining skull, and then he fell slowly backwards, like a great rag doll, over the battlements and out if sight. He scrambled to his feet; but many more Inferi were already climbing on to the rock, their bony hands clawing at its slippery surface, their blank, frosted eyes upon him, trailing waterlogged rags, sunken faces leering. http://www.wordle.net/show/wrdl/3007565/Half-Blood_Prince_Wordle Slipping and staggering, Harry got to his feet and plunged towards Malfoy, whose face was now shining scarlet, his white hands scrabbling at his blood-soaked chest. He had known Hagrid to present a vicious baby dragon with a teddy bear, seen him croon over giant scorpions with suckers and stings, attempt to reason with his brutal giant of a half-brother, but this was perhaps the most incomprehensible of all his monster fancies: the gigantic talking spider, Aragog, that dwelled deep in the Forbidden Forest and which he and Ron had only narrowly escaped four years previously. New pictures adorned the walls, many of them showing people who appeared to be in pain, sporting grisly injuries or strangely contorted body parts.

  9. Plot The climax I chose was a part near the ending of the book. At this point in the book Harry has traveled with Dumbledore to the sea-cave where young Voldemort would take his victims to torture. Harry and Dumbledore have traveled to this spot in search of a horcrux, a magical item that contains a fragment of a persons soul, in this case Voldemort’s. Before entering the cave, Dumbledore had told Harry to listen to whatever he says and to do anything that he demands without question. Inside the cave they find a small lake with an island in the middle. On the island is a crystal goblet and a reservoir full of liquid with the horcrux at the base of the reservoir. Dumbledore empties the reservoir by drinking it, consuming the poison inside that weakens him greatly. After Dumbledore drinks the poison, Harry and him are attacked by the undead guardians that Voldemort has placed in the lake surrounding them. Dumbledore and Harry barely escape the cave. When they return back to the Castle, Dumbledore is ambushed by Draco Malfoy, who has been sent to kill him. Draco can’t go through with it so Snape, who has vowed to protect Malfoy, must do the job. Dumbledore is killed. Later Harry discovers that the horcrux that he and Dumbledore had struggled to obtain was actually a fake, the real one was long gone. This could have turned out differently if Dumbledore had learned that the horcrux hidden in the cave was a fake. In that case he wouldn’t have needed to leave Hogwarts, which allowed the Death Eaters to enter the school and gave Malfoy the chance he needed to complete his mission. Even though Dumbledore was aware of Draco’s plot against him he determined that it would be best to let it happen. This was because Dumbledore knew he was already going to die from a pre-existing wound soon enough. He also knew that Draco and his family would be killed if he didn’t complete his task and Dumbledore didn’t want for anyone else to be hurt. Had Dumbledore known about the horcrux it is possible he would have chosen a better time to give Malfoy the opportunity to strike, causing less hardship on the teachers and students of Hogwarts. He may also have had more time to concoct a new plan that could have further prolonged his life, thereby severely altering the story line of the final book.

  11. Conflict The conflict that I chose was a man vs. woman conflict between Hermione and Ron. For a large quantity of the novel, Ron and Hermione quarrel with each other because of their secret emotions that they have for one another. It all starts when Ginny puts Ron down by saying that he hasn’t kissed anyone when all his friends had. Ron learning that Hermione had kissed someone made him upset with her. Hermione, not understanding why Ron was being so miserable all of a sudden became upset with Ron. When Ron decided to start a relationship with Lavender it caused Hermione to feel even more hurt. Ron and Hermione then continue to show public dislike of one another, Hermione even dating someone she did not like only to try to bother Ron. Eventually the situation corrects itself when Ron nearly dies from being poisoned. In the hospital bed he calls for Hermione instead of his girlfriend prompting hopes in Hermione that Ron shares her feelings for him. Hermione stays with Ron for most of the time he’s in the infirmary. When he is out of the hospital Ron claims to not know anything about calling for Hermione, which prompts her to again hide her feelings for Ron from him. This could all have been corrected if Ron and Hermione had only been more open about their feelings for one another. If Ron had explained why he had been mad at Hermione in the first place, then maybe Hermione would have told Ron the way that she felt about him and vice versa. This would have led to a much better situation all-around. VS

  12. Theme and Title Mystery • The theme that stands out the most throughout this novel is that of mystery. There are a lot of times that the reader and the characters of the novel will be wondering exactly what is going to happen next or who is behind it. There are a lot of unknown things in this book that the characters are frantically trying to find the answers to. Things like; who is the ‘Half-Blood Prince’, what is Draco Malfoy up to, and what are horcruxes? These answers all become clear to the protagonists eventually throughout the book, but by the ending the reader and the characters are left with even more questions like; what exactly did happen to Dumbledore’s hand, who is R.A.B., and why did Dumbledore trust Snape even up to the point when Snape killed him? I think that the title ‘Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince’ is a very good choice for this novel. Roughly 90% of this novel revolves around the unknown character that is the ‘Half-Blood Prince’. The textbook that he owned has a great influence on Harry throughout the novel, both good and bad. It also turns out that the person who is the ‘Half-Blood Prince’ is one of the most central characters in this novel, Snape. The entire story line is based around the actions of Snape and how Harry and the other characters view and react to him. I think that naming this book after Snape’s nickname is a good idea because this book is the first time that we start to delve into the complexity and history of Severus Snape.
