  2. What is it? Spinal cord is severed or damaged at any of the vertebrae Causes tend to come from traumatic accidents

  3. What is the Spinal Cord? The spinal cord is a long, thin bundle of nervous tissue and support cells that extends from the brain It makes up the Central Nervous system. It connects from the occipital bone down to the lower lumbar vertebrae.

  4. Incomplete & Complete Injuries When the spinal cord isn’t completely ruptured the person may have feeling or little movement. If completely torn, they won’t have feeling or movement.

  5. Names: Quadriplegic is when a person loses total feeling from the neck down. This happens when the spinal cord is completely ruptured at the cervical spine. Paraplegic is when a person is paralyzed from the waist down. This is when the spinal cord is completely torn from the lumbar spine.

  6. Progression: When the spinal cord is completely torn, there’s no recovery or other outcomes. Your body and internal organs will start to deteriorate, and age/health will be a factor to how long you live. (Usually life expectancy will be 10 yrs.)

  7. Recovery: • For incomplete recovery: -Physical therapy helps give people a bit of their motor skills back. (Usually in the first few months) -Depending on the person and the severity to their injury, some will eventually start to walk again. • Sometimes when a person is treated quickly enough, the doctor can inject the person with steroids to save their injury from becoming more severe.
