  6. Nuclear Power • Discovery & Use of Nuclear Power has led to the modern atomic era. • Nuclear Power is seen from two sides: one of best ways for generating electricity versus the means for humanity to destroy itself

  7. Nuclear Power • Why the dilemma? • Nuclear Power is self-sustaining requiring very low fuel quantities (once per year) versus coal (daily) • Safety Concerns about design & location of sites • Problem with Waste Disposal & Storage

  8. Nuclear Power • Nuclear Power results from a chain reaction between the nuclear fuel and a neutron. • One of products generated are more neutrons which can further react with the fuel.

  9. Nuclear Power • To sustain the reaction, the nuclear fuel must be “enriched” to between 3-4% Uranium-235 • Temperature inside nuclear reactor core must be regulated since a tremendous amount of heat is released. This is accomplished using water.
