This article explores the evolution and significance of wikis as collaborative web applications that allow multiple authors to create and edit content. First established in 1995, wikis have become vital tools for participatory journalism, fostering community engagement and knowledge sharing. Despite their potential for promoting interactive content, wikis also face challenges such as vandalism and misinformation. Additionally, we assess the role of Wikipedia as an authoritative source of information, revealing trends in user engagement and traffic sources, especially via search engines like Google.

WIKIS 1 70% of Wikipedia’s traffic comes from search engines (Presscott, 2007). Google is the source of 50% of Wikipedia’s traffic. Wikipedia has become a sort of “authoritative” source that people turn when they search for encyclopedic information. WIKIS 1 Wikis are web applications which enable multiple authors to add, remove, and edit content in a process of collaborative authoring - usually through WYSIWYG controls that resemble those of a word processor or blog. It was first established in 1995 as WikiWikiWeb, now there are currently hundreds of wikis covering topics ranging from geology and physics to food and travel. The name comes from the Hawaian term wiki wiki, meaning quick and informal.
