  2. Let’s recap… Intention – the aim or purpose What the speaker wants to happen as a result of the text; what they want the audience to believe or do after hearing the speech. Audience Their beliefs attitudes, knowledge, values… They hold beliefs about the speaker and the subject based on past experience They use their ability to reason and are persuaded by the evidence presented to them. Genre The type of text (speech) the speaker chooses to achieve his/her intention in a particular context. Subject What it’s all about and the evidence used to develop it Good speakers take something people already know about and tell them things they don’t so that they stay interested. Speaker or writer The speaker creates a persona – a character he/she wants the audience to perceive himself or herself as, based on: Who they presume the audience to be and What they know and believe about the subject (and what they think will be most persuasive to the audience) Appealing to Audience Logos – by offering a clear, reasonable central idea and developing it with appropriate reasoning, examples and details Ethos – by offering evidence that she/he is credible (that is, that they know the topic and that they are a good person with the reader’s best interest at heart Pathos – by drawing on the emotions and interests of the audience so they will be sympathetic to the speakers ideas Context Time, place, people, events and motivating forces that all influence how the speaker understands, analyses and generates the persona and the subject matter material.

  3. Task: Analyse and evaluate the Queen’s tribute to Diana in light of the modified Rhetorical Triangle. Remember to consider both: The speaker The speech This will be peer assessed using our standard class rubric – let’s review it!
