  2. The Spirit of Kyoto is The Gold Standard “The purpose of the CDM shall be to assist Parties not included in Annex I in achieving sustainable developmentand in contributing to the ultimate objective of the Convention, and to assist Parties included in Annex I in achieving compliance with their quantified emission limitation and reduction commitments...” -- Kyoto protocol, Article 12.2

  3. An introduction to the Gold Standard What is the Gold Standard? • non-profit Foundation endorsed by 60 NGOs; based in Switzerland • An internationally recognised tool promoting premium quality emission reduction projects with a proven contribution to both sustainable development and climate protection • Objectives • Aligning the dual goals of offsetting • Setting & shaping a quality benchmark in all project-based markets • Provide buyer/investor guidance and reward extra efforts

  4. Gold Standard Infrastructure • Secretariat - Geneva • (multiple reviews of projects; brand management, developer assistance) • Registry - operated by APX Inc. • (200 accounts; information tools emerging) • Local Expert network - building developer, NGO, DOE capacity • (currently China, India, South Africa, Brazil; 7 regions globally > 2009) • Technical Advisory Committee - independent experts • (Audits & VER Methodology approval beyond UNFCCC scope: Cookstoves, Biodigesters)

  6. How does Gold Standard work? The criteria are simple... • Renewable Energy & Energy Efficiency • Additionality • Sustainable Development (self assessment & stakeholders) • Third-Party Audits & Scrutiny

  7. Pre-screening • - PIN • Eligibility (1st screen) • Additionality (2nd screen) • Sust. Development (3rd screen) • Local Stakeholder Consult. • non technical summary • SD indicators • draft PDD • GS Certification • 3-weeks review period • issuance of credits • serial number • Retroactive Registration • feasibility pre-assessment • TAC • Project Final Design • - PDD • - Methodology • Additionality • Do-no-Harm • SD Matrix • GS Verification • DOE • monitoring (inc. SD ind.) • Verification report • Stakeholder Feedback Round • non tech. summary • SD indicators • final PDD • GS Registration • - 8 weeks review period • TAC • GS External Validation • - DOE • Validation report • GS Internal Validation • - TAC • Validation statement micro-scale projects

  8. Buyer’s demand on projects “Quality Quality Quality” © Ecosystem Marketplace & New Carbon Finance 2008

  9. Value Drivers • Reputation & Market Visibility • Global Brand • Broad NGO, industry backing • Undercurrent of political support • Non-carbon Risk Management • Stakeholder involvement • Scope & Delivery • Premium prices • Costs << Benefits • Demand >> Supply ==> 5-25% premium for CERs / 20-150% for VERs

  11. Role of GS in the Compliance Market • Reforming CDM from within requires clarifying the carbon market’s purpose -- and this is the GS mission • Promote medium term shift towards sustainable energy consumption & sustainable energy supply • Enhance local stakeholder involvement • Promote best practice for project development, validation, and verification • Beyond carbon reduction - monitor and capture co-benefits all along the project lifetime

  12. Role of GS in the Voluntary Market • The same as for the compliance market, but…. • Respond to current demand for GS VERs. • Build capacity among “green” project developers. • Harness the innovation of the U.S. • Explain and maintain reputation as premium brand and top quality product. • Educate market actors about the need for high environmental integrity and sustainable development in carbon market. • Provide input to help shape emergent market infrastructure.

  13. Pipeline • Total expected annual volume in pipeline: 15 million / 205 projects • CERs : 9 million / 102 projects • VERs : 6 million / 103 projects • Total expected annual volume, registered projects: 1 million / 15 projects • CERs : 250,000 / 8 projects • VERs : 750,000 / 7 projects • Number of countries where GS projects are/may be implemented: 35

  17. Gold Standard Registry

  18. Malavalli Biomass Plant • Project Stream: Gold Standard CERs • Project type: Renewable Energy, Biomass Power • Methodology: AMS.I.D • GS Registration: 2006 (retroactive) • Estimated average annual volume: 20’000 CERs “Before we used to spend 12-15 Rs travelling to pay the bill and is used to take the whole day. Now my husband bikes to pay the bill and he is back within one hour.”  -Chicktha, a local user of the new billing service center

  19. Malavalli Biomass Plant • Organic farming practices • 650 new local jobs • 21,000 less tonnes CO2e/year • Rs. 45 Million to local economy • Clean biomass disposal • Reliable energy for 18 hrs/day and improved voltage. • Increased electricity promotes new industry, such as a saw mill. • More water: farmers can now grow more than one crop a year.

  20. Zengamina Mini Hydro Mwinilunga District, Zambia • Project Stream: Gold Standard VERs • Project type: Renewable Energy, Mini Hydro • Methodology: AMS.I.D • Date of registration: 2008 • Expected First Vintage: 2009 • Estimated average annual volume: Up to >3,000 VERs

  21. Zengamina Mini Hydro Mwinilunga District, Zambia • 450 jobs at the peal, a large proportion of which are women. For many, this job represented their first cash income. • Reduced emissions by up to 3,000 tonnes CO2e per year • Contributed 1,532,000 Zambia Kwacha into the local economy. • Improved local respiratory health. • Provides access to affordable electricity for local residents.
