  18. What are 2 ways glaciers helped shape the Northeast? Glaciers scraped away fertile soil and formed basins that later filled water to become lakes. In the northern coastal areas, they scraped away that topsoil.

  20. How might a harbor and a port be related? A harbor is a protected area of water where ships can dock safely. As a result, many ports might be in harbors.

  22. During the 1800’s and early 1900’s, what caused Northeastern cities to grow crowded? Millions of immigrants arrived in the United States. Many immigrants stayed in the Northeast to work in factories.

The second sentence and any additional sentences should give more details to help and support the topic sentence. Write out a draft answer first, using your book to get facts. Have someone sit down and review your answer. Then write your final copy.

  24. What were three changes that occurred during the Industrial Revolution? Many changes occurred during the Industrial Revolution. Machines powered by steam engines replaced water-powered machines. Electric power plants provided electricity for homes and factories. Electricity led to the spread of new inventions, such as the telephone and the light bulb.
