This study guide explores various adaptations in plants and animals that enable them to thrive in their habitats. Key concepts include plant adaptations like spiky leaves for protection and the role of color and odor in attracting pollinators. Animal adaptations such as blubber for warmth and camouflage for hunting are also discussed. The guide highlights instinctual behaviors and examples, such as mimicry in butterflies and survival strategies in frogs. Through understanding these adaptations, we see the intricate relationship between organisms and their environments.

Chapter 4 Study Guide Written by Mrs. Koester’s Class
Adaptation • An adaptation of a cactus is having spikey leaves to protect it from being eaten. • Mimicry • Some non-poisonous butterflies use mimicry to mimic poisonous butterflies. • Instinct • I have an instinct to breath. • Camouflage • A polar bear uses camouflage to look like snow, to get its food.
Big Idea Review • Plant Adaptations: • Color: attracts different animals to the flower • Odor: attracts different animals to the flower • Protection: spikes, tree bark keep the plant safe and living • broad leaves: collecting sunlight • Thick waxy leaves: helped to hold water • Camouflage blend in
Big Idea Review (cont.) • Body Temperature: • Blubber is an extra layer of fat to help keep animals warm in cold environments • Big ears help lose body heat on hot days • Cause and Effect • The odor and colors cause the bees to come • more flowers-> more food -> more bees!
Big Idea Review (cont.) Cactus have a thin stem to store water. It has tiny leaves called spines instead of large broad leaves. The spines keep the cactus from losing water.
Big Idea Review (cont.) • Looks like a twig->My guess its that it uses mimicry , It could be that it uses camouflage to blend in, this adaptation could help it get food or protect itself. • Environment • Forest, on plants, near leaves, they can be on the ground, on the brown or beige part
Big Idea Review (cont) • The frog would not survive because it doesn’t have the adaptations it needs such as blubber, fur, wool, down feathers.
Environment: Forest Insects Both use camouflage
