  2. Sources of Fiqh • 4 main sources of fiqh: • Qur’an • Sunnah • Mutawatir • Sahih • Hasan • Da’if • Mawdu • Ijma’ (scholarly consensus) • Qiyas (juristic analogy)

  3. Sources of Fiqh • Textual evidence must be examined from 2 perspectives: • Authenticity of text (thubut) • Focus on isnad (chain of narration) • Meaning of text (dalalah) • Focus on matn (text itself)

  4. Fiqh Terms • Fard (obligatory) • Wajib (mandatory) • Sunnah • Muakkadah (strongly emphasized) • Ghayrmuakkadah (less emphasized) • Mustahabb (recommended) • Mubah / Ja’iz (permissible) • Makruh • Tahrim (prohibitively disliked) • Tanzih (somewhat disliked) • Haram (impermissible)
