Paul Davidson, M.D., Professor of Medicine at the University of California Medical Center, described disorders that affect tendons, joint capsules, ligaments, fascias, bursas, cartilages and muscles as “soft-tissue rheumatism,” and distinguished these conditions from “arthritis” which affects hard tissues.

  10. What do all these conditions have in common?

  11. Common Symptoms are: • Fatigue, inflammation of muscle tissues • muscle weakness • pain, local tenderness, and stiffness of joints, muscles, joint capsules and adjacent structures • limitation of motion at joints • joint swelling and redness along with a host of other symptoms

  12. Holistic Approach • From a natural holistic approach, finding an exact name or names for a particular person's cluster of symptoms is relatively unimportant. • What is important is identifying the underlying causes of a person's health issues and dealing with that.

  13. Causes • Medical science has not determined an exact cause of many of these conditions . • These disorders typically overlap, suggesting they have common root causes. • Many different names have been given to the exact same set of symptoms.

  14. Causes • Since fibromyalgia and many other conditions are essentially unheard of in third world and developing countries, we can reasonably suspect that they probably have their roots in our modern diet and lifestyle.

  15. Fibromyalgia Fibromyalgia is the most common of these conditions—so let’s take a closer look at it.

Fibromyalgia • Fibromyalgia is now the most common disorder seen by rheumatologists after Osteoarthritis and Rheumatoid Arthritis. • Nearly 25% of patients seen at rheumatology clinics are actually suffering from Fibromyalgia. • Professor Bruce Rothschild of Northeast Ohio Universities College of Medicine

  17. Fibromyalgia • Estimates are that there are between 3 and 6 million people suffering with fibromyalgia, although some figures in the U.S. are as high as 12-15 million.

  19. The average person with Fibromyalgia has gone 10 years before being correctly diagnosed, seen 12 doctors, tried 15-18 medications, and were put through unnecessary operations for symptoms related to Fibromyalgia.

  20. Many are disabled and unable to work, and 35% have had members of their families diagnosed with Fibroymyalgia.

  21. Fibromyalgia Syndrome or FMS Fibromyalgia is a syndrome: A cluster of symptoms that typically come together that may seem unrelated.

  22. Typical FMS Client • The typical FMS patient looks healthy; no one can imagine that they are ill and in a great deal of pain. • As a result, FMS sufferers often receive little empathy from family, friends, or even health care practitioners.

  23. Confusion • FMS is often confused with, or can be concurrent with, chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS), irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and rheumatoid arthritis, as they all share similar symptoms.

  24. FMS Is Not A Wastebasket Diagnosis • Many have been told that FMS is a diagnosis of exclusion and that it falls into the wastebasket category of ill-defined conditions.

  25. FMS Is Not A Wastebasket Diagnosis Many are diagnosed after a battery of blood tests, x-rays and spinal taps. And when the tests came back negative, the doctor might have also sent them to a psychiatrist for further evaluation-just so that you could prove to the doctor that your problems weren't “all in your head.”

  26. Root Causes • Based on the experience of herbalists and others working with FMS, two of it’s root causes are most likely: • excessive stress • nutritional deficiencies

  28. Chronic Stress (Adrenal Exhaustion) • FMS is most common in hardworking perfectionists. K.P. Khalsa, RH(AHG), has noted that FMS sufferers are usually high achieving women that are burning the candle at both ends and in the middle, too.   29. Triggering Event • In my experience, I have been surprised how many people, when asked, can give me the triggering event that “sent them over the edge”. • I have found many to be caregivers that don’t take very good care of themselves.

  32. Pain • Most people feel the pain of fibromyalgia as aching, stiffness and tenderness around joints, muscles, tendons and ligaments.

  33. Pain Pain may appear in one or more locations at the same time and also in many different parts of your body.

  34. The pain is located within the muscles themselves, as well as at the points where ligaments attach muscles to bones. For reasons that are still unknown, if you have fibromyalgia, you will feel extreme tenderness over many of these locations. • These sites of tenderness are called tender points or trigger points

  35. Pain A diagnosis of fibromyalgia is determined when at least 11 trigger points are tender when touched.
