  1. Mrs. Douglass’s Radical Reading Detectives Wheelerville Union Free School District 2012-2013

  2. Meet the Teacher My name is Mrs. Douglass. Please make yourself at home. Feel free to walk around the room and enjoy some refreshments.

  3. Parent Teacher Conferences Parent teacher conferences will not be in November this year. Instead they will be on January 25th. Before leaving today, please sign up for a time and I will send a reminder letter home as the date approaches. Don’t worry. If you find that the date & time that you chose isn’t going to work, we can change it later.

  4. How can I help my child succeed in 4th grade? • Be consistent. Make school the #1 priority. • Your child is still a child. They need you to hold them accountable, but they also need you to do your part. Make sure they show you their folder, and that theyclean it out nightly. • You must read over and sign the agenda so that you know what their responsibilities are as well as whether I have included a note in the agenda.

  5. What do reading detectives do? • Reread. They don’t rely on their memory. They find the answers in the text. • Highlight key words in the directions and questions, in order to help them focus and understand better. • Use the process of elimination when choosing an answer with multiple choice questions. • And all the strategies that you see in the hallway. If you would like a copy of these strategies, let me know please. I will be sending home a weekly letter with a strategy each week or so.

  6. How can I help my child succeed in reading? • Be a reading detective (Again, please see Reading Detective Strategies on the hallway wall). Help your child use these strategies forever. • Establish a love of reading at home- read nightly and let your children see you reading (even if it’s a magazine). • Encourage your children to read all different kinds of text (fiction, non-fiction, poetry, etc.).

  7. How can my child succeed in math? • Your child must know his/her facts quickly (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division). Please get some flashcards. Even the best students need to review. • Write neatly, large enough, and line up your numbers. • Math involves reading too. Once again, be a reading detective.

  8. SocialStudies & Science • Please make sure your children study. Then, quiz them, especially on any weak areas. • Make sure that they know the vocabulary that I will be sending home too .

  9. State Exams Your child will be taking 3 state exams this year (math, ELA, & science). I need your help to help them be the best that they can be. We must work as a team. Please be positive and help them be prepared and organized. They can do it. We are all in this together.

  10. New York State Map Projects As you can see in the hallway, you and the children did a magnificent job on their projects!!!

  11. Field Trips We will be going on a field trip to the Albany State Museum on Friday, October 19th. More information will be sent home as the date approaches.

  12. Thank You... for taking the time to attend Open House! I look forward to working with you and your child this year. It is going to be a wonderful year filled with exciting learning activities!
