The main purpose of the Workshop is to exchange information on ongoing and future research projectsand to foster closer contactsand possible future collaborations.Support to fundamental research in Viet Nam is very low, in particular in domains at the frontier of knowledge such as particle physics and astrophysics, where there exists no tradition nor culture.The success of our research relies on the collaboration with astrophysicists from abroad (Taiwan, France) who have easier access to international observatories.

  5. WELCOME TO VATLY April-May, 2013

A few words about VATLYVATLY (Vietnam Training Auger LaboratorY, means “physics” in Vietnamese) was created thirteen years ago in association with the International Pierre Auger Observatory in Argentina, which studies the high energy end of the cosmic ray spectrum.After successful collaboration and contribution to the PAO research, motivated by physics arguments on the time scale and promises of such research as well as by practical local considerations, we decided to switch to astrophysics, specifically to radio astronomy.This was in some respect a courageous move to the extent that we were leaving a field where we were well known on the international scene for a field where we are newcomers.

  7. We were encouraged on this road by Pr Nguyen Quang Rieu and we enjoy moral and material support from astrophysicists both in France and in IAU, whom we express here our deepest gratitude. The choice of radio astronomy as a particular branch of astrophysics was dictated by a combination of physics motivations (its presence at the forefront of most current explorations on the frontier of modern astrophysics) as well as by arguments of convenience (influence of NQ Rieu, existence of DV Trung and PB Ngoc, near impossibility to make observations in the visible under the foggy tropical sky). VATLY now means Vietnam Astrophysics Trainig LaboratorY

Our current main contributions to research cover a study of the host galaxy of a z=3 QSO and that of the circumstellar envelope of an AGB star, both in the context of joint PhD supervision agreements (4 months abroad/yr). At home, we operate a 2.6 m diameter telescope tuned on the 21cm line. We shall report on such research at the Workshop. We are looking forward to an expansion of its scope. We contribute to the teaching of astrophysics at HUS, HUE and USTH and do our utmost to attend conferences and schools, in particular in the region, as well as contributing to public outreach and to the promotion of astrophysics in the country.
