Two Cases: Africare/Malawi and Africare/DRC • Malawi: I-LIFE in 7 Priority Districts in Southern Malawi • 5- year $2.9 m MYAP in consortium with seven NGO’s • 34,150 MT monetized; 5,650 MT for direct distribution • Focus: Reduce food security among 20,000 vulnerable poor • DRC: JENGA in South Kivu Province • 3-year $3.0 m MYAP in consortium with ADRA • 13,202 MT monetized; 2,182 for direct distribution • Focus: Reduce food security of 18,000 female-headed households and returnees • Interventions: • Improved varieties • Improved production techniques • Farmer mobilization into production and marketing groups and savings and loans groups • Food for Work for infrastructure • Targeted feeding • Interventions: • Resettlement support • Improved agricultural practices • Improved market linkages • Rebuilding of irrigation systems and household storage lost in the conflict • Targeted feeding

Village Savings and Loans in Malawi • Members of self-selected groups save money to be a source of loan capital for members to borrow from 228 groups - 70% women • Provide savings services in communities with no access to formal sector financial services • Enables members start business ventures in order to build up financial capabilities Total Cumulative Savings: $169,540 Total cumulative loans: $123,400 Women VSL transaction in progress Knitting business from VSL proceeds

NUTRITION: Activities implemented through Care Group Africare’s Care Group beneficiaries: • Growth Monitoring • Health Promoters and Care Groups trained • Lead Mothers trained to provide education on child care and feeding practices • Beneficiary mothers involved in market gardening of highly nutritious crops Support to HIV/AIDS Infected and Affected HHs • Mainstreaming of HIV/AIDS messages in all program interventions • Linkage of HIV/AIDS support groups with other service providers • Psycho-social support to PLWA through positive living services Growth monitoring for under five children Cooking demonstrations

Some Achievements of the Malawi Project 50% reduction in the number of underweight children Almost 90% of beneficiaries purchased improved crop varieties 100 % adoption of improved agriculture production techniques 2-3 crop cycles per season instead of only 1 9.4 months of food provisioning, up from 6.8 months
