Understanding CEDS: Enhancing Education Data Standards for Informed Decision-Making
The Common Education Data Standards (CEDS) initiative aims to create voluntary, consistent data standards for essential education data elements. CEDS provides a common vocabulary that facilitates accurate, timely, and reliable information sharing across various educational sectors. It addresses the need for data interoperability among stakeholders like educators, policymakers, and institutions by offering tools like the CEDS Element Database and data alignment tools. Version 2 focuses on key areas including postsecondary education, early learning, and K-12, promoting better educational outcomes through improved data practices.

What is the Standard? • A national collaborative effort to develop voluntary, commondata standards for a key set of education data elements • A vocabulary including standard definitions, code sets & technical specifications. Voluntary Common Vocabulary
Why do we need CEDS? Accurate, timely, and consistent information to inform decisionmaking • Educators and policymakers need accurate, timely, and consistent information about students and schools in order to plan effective learning experiences, improve schools, and reduce costs. Share & compare high quality data within & across P-20W sectors • Our student population is highly mobile – across districts and states, and between early learning, K12, postsecondary & the workforce. Thus, the need to share high quality data requires that we develop a common vocabulary for a core subset of data elements that exist in multiple data systems.
is Not: CEDS Required All or nothing A data collection An implementation Solely an ED undertaking A federal unit record system
