Exploring Ancient Number Systems: Egyptians, Romans, and Mayans
Discover the fascinating number systems of ancient civilizations, including the Egyptians, Romans, and Mayans. Egyptian numbers rely on symbols, such as strokes for 1 and a lotus for 1,000. The Romans used letters we often see in modern clocks, while the Mayans innovated with shells, dots, and lines, uniquely incorporating the concept of zero. Each culture developed distinct methods for adding and subtracting numbers, with the Egyptian system resembling symbols, Roman numerals resembling letters, and Mayan numbers presenting simple lines and dots. Join us in understanding these historical numeric representations!

Egyptian numbers and Hieroglyphs ! Egyptian numbers are mostly symbols like these 1 is shown by a single stroke. 10 is shown by a drawing of a hobble for cattle. 100 is represented by a coil of rope. 1,000 is a drawing of a lotus plant. 10,000 is represented by a finger. 100,000 by a tadpole or frog The symbol for a million is a god called Heh. It also means just a very large number, I think it looks like he’s Praying or thanking someone.
Roman numbers Roman numbers are quite common today and sometimes you see these numbers on clocks and I have one at home. Romans also had numerals (symbols) such as these.
Mayan numbers The Mayans had a number system of shells, dots, and lines. You could write up to nineteen with just these symbols. The Mayan numbers were the only ancient civilizations that understood the number zero. This allowed them to write very large numbers. I think that this number system is the most simple because the way I see it is made out of lines and dots and the only thing that is abit complicated is the way that they are set out.
Comparison! There is a big difference to these number systems like Egyptian numbers are more like symbols and roman numbers are like letters and Mayan are just simple lines and dots. So I think that they all have a different way of adding and subtracting.
