Jarl Bengtsson (°1937-†2012) • Jarl Bengtssonwas Head of CERI from its start in 1972 till his retirement in 2002 • He passed away on 5 December 2012 • We honour his legacy • His work on lifelong learning • His interest in school-work transition and youth unemployment • His pioneering work on educational statistics and indicators • His work on brain research and learning science • His deep interest in innovation, but also in policy relevance

Innovative Teaching for Effective Learning (ITEL) • Analysis of TALIS 2008 data, TALIS/CERI thematic report • Teaching Practices and Pedagogical Innovation (2012) • Co-organisation with University of Cambridge and Education International • Sustaining Teachers’ Professional Growth Workshop, Cambridge – February 2013 • Continued work on case studies of innovative math & science teaching in Singapore, China, Romania, Mexico... • Co-organisation with Center for Curriculum Redesign • 21st Century Math Conference, Stockholm, 22-24 April 2013

Innovative Teaching for Effective Learning (ITEL) • Continued work on how learning research can inform teachers’ pedagogical knowledge • Literature reviews & Development of a conceptual framework • Expert group meeting planned • Analytical comparisons of codifications of teachers’ pedagogical knowledge • Competency frameworks • Professional standards, Certification requirements

Innovative Teaching for Effective Learning (ITEL) • Development of a measurement tool to assess the quality of the knowledge base in the profession (not to assess individual teachers’ quality) • Validation and peer review of conceptual framework • Item and instrument development • Pilot testing (?)

Innovative Learning Environments (ILE) • Major discussion on ILE at previous Governing Board meeting in October 2012 • The ILE conference jointly organized with the Ministry of Education, Chile took place in Santiago 7-9 January 2013, attended by 115 participants from over 20 countries – excellent discussions • The ‘Innovative Cases’ report revised to incorporate comments from last Governing Board and extensive feedback from Santiago – publication date: July/August 2013.

  11. Innovative Learning Environments (ILE) • Strand 3 on ‘Implementation and Change’ now has 30 systems participating – the questionnaire for the monitoring notes was sent out early April 2013 • The work with ‘laboratories of learning change’ is taking place with a small number of volunteer systems – a 1st workshop 11-12 July 2013 and a 2nd in mid-2014. • Possible line-up: British Columbia, Canada; French Belgium; KwaZulu Natal, South Africa; New Zealand; ColegiosPeruanos network, Peru

Innovative Learning Environments (ILE) • Next ILE coordinators’ meeting 3 December 2013 followed by international seminar on learning leadership 4-5 December, Barcelona • ILE preparing a chapter for Education Policy Outlook 2014 publication • Working up to a major horizontal CERI conference on Innovation, Governance and Reform, latter half 2014

Staff movements Sonia Guerrierohas moved to CERI from the PISA team to be the project leader for the Innovative Teaching for Effective Learning (ITEL) project Francesco Avvisatihas left CERI to work on a temporary assignment with the PISA team Kiira Kärkäinenwill leave CERI after having worked 5 years on the University Futures and Innovation Strategy projects Marina Ma has joined CERI as an intern to work on the Innovative Learning Environments project Elodie de Oliveira has joined CERI as a consultant to work on the Education and Social Project (ESP) project
