  3. Components of a Successful Program • Identify, Appoint, and Train Mentors • Assign Mentors to referee teams at the new referee trainings • Ideally, one Mentor should be assigned to no more than three (3) new referees

  4. Mentoring Ratio

  5. Mentor Qualifications Technical Qualifications • Regional Referee Certification (Basic Referee Course) Ideally with one to three years of experience • Intermediate Referee Certification Recommended • Safe Haven certified

  6. Mentor Qualifications • Personal Qualifications • Committed to AYSO • Ready to devote time and energy • Good people and communication skills • Good observer / Positive teacher • Listen, encourage and understand • Know the Laws of the Game and referee mechanics

  7. Guide to Mentors • Personal contact as soon as possible • Initial meeting • Discuss objectives • Reflect, Re-evaluate and Renew

  8. Break-Out Groups Split into groups Pick a discussion leader You will be asked a series of questions • With the assistance of your discussion leader, list as many one-word answers as time permits • Select the top two answers Discussion leader reports the results

  14. The Referee Mentor Program is Important • Increases comfort level of new referees • Encourages all referees to improve • Assists in recruiting, retaining and advancing referees • Offers opportunities for injured, senior and retired referees to continue volunteering in AYSO

  15. Scenarios • Breakout groups. One participant assumes role of ‘REFEREE’ and another the role of ‘MENTOR’. • Items in scenario were observed by mentor during match. • What is important. What is not important. • What to say to ‘REFEREE’. • How to present information. • Role-play in front of entire group.
