  1. Write your name at the top of your notes!

  2. How are they similar and how are they different??? • Don’t worry about writing anything- just analyze the model.

  3. Single Strand Double Stranded

  4. Example of Protein Synthesis • Transcription- using DNA to make mRNA. This occurs in the nucleus and after it’s over the completed mRNA leaves the nucleus, goes out into the cytoplasm and finds a ribosome.

  5. Example of Protein Synthesis • You’ll start with one side of a DNA molecule that’s been opened. You have to match RNA nucleotides with DNA nucleotides using these rules: • DNA nucleotide = RNA nucleotide • Adenine  uracil • Thymine  adenine • Cytosine  guanine • Guanine  cytosine

  6. Example of Protein Synthesis • DNA nucleotide = RNA nucleotide • Adenine  uracil • Thymine  adenine • Cytosine  guanine • Guanine  cytosine U A C C A U C G A U U G G A A

  7. Example of Protein Synthesis • Translation – when a ribosome reads mRNA and matches amino acids to it in order to build a protein. tRNA brings the amino acids to the ribosome. This entire process takes place in the cytoplasm. Use one of the codon tables to match the mRNA codons to the amino acids.

  8. Example of Protein Synthesis • Use these rules to match mRNA nucleotides to tRNA nucleotides: mRNA to tRNA Adenine  Uracil Cytosine  Guanine

  9. Example of Protein Synthesis • Use the mRNA codons and this codon chart to get the correct sequence of amino acids.

  10. Example of Protein Synthesis • The finished protein will most likely go to the rough ER to be modified and transported to the Golgi apparatus. The Golgi apparatus will package the protein in a vesicle to be shipped out of the cell and used in the organism.
