Identified challenges • Tackling congestion • Improve connectivity to inter-urban, regional and international networks • Supporting regeneration and business growth • Addressing the transport impacts of growth • Reducing transport’s impact on the environment • Development of a low-carbon transport system • Encouraging active travel • Improving personal safety • Provision of an affordable, reliable, and convenient public transport network • Improving access particularly from rural areas • Maintaining the existing transport infrastructure

Key Challenges • Tackling congestion to support business competitiveness • Connectivity to strategic regional/national networks • Increasing capacity to accommodate growth • Delivering a low carbon transport system and adapting to climate change • Neighbourhood transformation • Influencing travel behaviour and promoting active travel • Effective partnership working/delivering against different agendas

Nottingham Options • Prioritise essential maintenance, casualty reduction and support for existing public transport services. • Maximise benefits from major public transport investment and planned introduction of Workplace Parking Levy. • Support urban regeneration particularly regeneration zones, and Strategic Regeneration Frameworks. • Expand Area Capital Fund approach. • Support more walking and cycling. • Electrification of the transport system and more resilient networks.

Planned Measures • Major Schemes • NET Phase 2 and planning for future phases • Station Hub • Linkbus network expansion • -: Supported through introduction of the Workplace Parking Levy from 2012 • Ring Road major scheme • And responding to: • A453 (M1 to Nottingham) • Midland Mainline upgrading and electrification • High Speed Rail

Planned Measures • Supporting regeneration and housing growth including: • Cross city bus transit routes • Connecting Eastside/Broad Marsh • re-introduction of traditional street layouts • Green Infrastructure links e.g. River Leen Corridor, Embankment and Broxtowe Country Park • Community-led priorities – footways, parking and traffic management schemes and local accessibility schemes

Smarter Choices – business support package, car club, journey planning information • Upgraded walking and cycling networks • Network management – advanced traffic control technologies, road works permit scheme • 20 mph zones in residential areas • Greening the transport fleet – Ecolink (ethanol fuelled), Centrelink (electric), fleets, promoting the take up of private electric vehicles

  12. Derbyshire Options • Balancing the transport goals: • 1. Emphasis on supporting economic growth, better safety, security and health, quality of life and healthy natural environment (based on results of Derbyshire Surveys in 2009) • 2. Emphasis on tackling climate change and supporting economic growth (described as the biggest challenge in DfT DaSTS) • 3. Tackling inequality (not a popular choice in consultations, but important to Derbyshire – rural accessibility and deprived urban areas)

  13. Measures in Greater Nottingham Area? • Key areas of work likely to be around: • Helping settlements to ‘stand on their own feet’ • e.g. development of cycling network • Ensuring accessibility to higher-level services in Nottingham, Derby etc e.g. provision of Ilkeston rail station
