  1. Unit Conversions! Objective: I can convert between two units and solve problems.

  2. Why should we learn this? • So you don’t end up like this guy’s girlfriend….. • www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qhm7-LEBznk

  3. Times where I have used unit conversions….

  4. So, how do we convert units? • Example 1: • So, we already know that it would take one hour to drive 80 miles at 80 miles per hour, but how long would it take to drive 278 miles (the distance from Spokane to Seattle) at 80MPH? • Note:

  5. 278 miles at 80MPH • Set up a conversion table • Cancel common units • Multiply top and bottom • Simplify 278 x 1 hour 1 hour 278 miles = = 80 80miles

  6. Example 2: • When I studied abroad, I took a direct flight from Seattle, WA to Amsterdam, Netherlands. The plane flew at 497miles per hour. How long was my flight in hours and minutes? 1 hour 4859 x 1 hours 4859 miles = = 497 497miles But wait! We’re not done!

  7. Since we only want the partial hours to calculate the minutes we need to do: 60 min 0.7767 x 60 min 0.7767hours = 1 1 hour = So, the flight was approximately 9 hours and 47 minutes

  8. Example 3: • As you probably know, I really like Starbucks. There are no Starbucks in Italy, so I had to wait until I went somewhere else to buy some. But I want to know how much I paid in each country in US dollars. Starbucks in Prague, Czech Republic Cost: 74CZK Form of Currency: Koruna Starbucks in Madrid, Spain Cost: 4.50Euro Form of Currency: Euro

  9. Currency Exchange Rates: Starbucks in Prague, Czech Republic Cost: 74CZK Form of Currency: Koruna Starbucks in Madrid, Spain Cost: 4.50Euro Form of Currency: Euro Cost of Prague Starbucks in USD= Cost of Madrid Starbucks in USD= Better deal=

  10. Example 4 • In order to get from Amsterdam to Florence, I had to take another flight. It is 859.7miles from Amsterdam to Florence. If you looked at a road sign in Europe though, it would be in kilometers instead of miles. • How far is it from Amsterdam to Florence in kilometers?
