  2. In this Chapter we will: • Explore what field practitioners cite as the multiple dimensions of a master teacher’s influence as a (1) Mentor, (2) Coach and (3) Advocate for students and colleagues. • Know where in the ladder of master teacher characteristics practitioners place its importance. Core Belief #8:

  3. Alignment of Survey Response with Core Belief #8: • Through a survey done by Teachers, principals and Superintendents, the ranking of importance resulted in the following as the top of the list: • Exemplifying ethical standards • Modeling appreciation for learning • Laying a foundation for lifelong learning. • There were also many other characteristics cited as elements of how master teachers extend their influence. Some of the elements stated in Figure 11-2 are:

  4. Characteristics sited as elements OF HOW MASTER TEACHERS EXTEND THEIR INFLUENCE: A Master Teacher… Assumes leadership roles in school events and projects. Creates a desire in others that they too can and should aspire to be exemplary. Serves as a source of information and advice for other teachers.

  7. The value of Master Teachers to the entire school community is beyond measures. Why? They provide influences to hundreds, even thousands of students, parents, colleagues, and community members that can last a lifetime.

  8. Being an Advocate for colleagues and students… • Is not an easy task and most of the time is difficult for others to accept. • Yet, what distinguishes a master teacher as an advocate is the ability to relate, connect, and stay connected to each student as well as colleagues. • Requires three distinct attitudes: • Respect • Empathy • Expectation

  9. When a Master Teacher demonstrates these attitudes colleagues and students will… • Respect the teacher • Listen to the teacher • Seek the teacher out • Want to be in the teacher’s company • Will treat the teacher as a leader.

  10. How many Master Teachers do YOU have in your Campus?

  11. Chapter 12 - Passion “ You cannot kindle a fire in any other heart until it is first burning in your own.” – William James Core Belief #9: “The master teacher is highly competent in his or her subject matter and is passionate about what he or she teaches and for learning as a whole. As a result, he or she engenders in students a passion for learning.”

  12. Passion • Many believe that a teachers passion stems from a passion for the subject matter, which then flows to the desire to transmit that knowledge to the student. • Common Assumption about teacher passion: • Teacher competency and passion for subject • student learning • student passion for learning as a whole • Current Research states: • Passion for teaching • Use of a wide variety of instructional techniques • Student learning • Student passion for learning.

  13. Have a Passion for Teaching • This research shows that a teacher may be passionate about his/hers subject matter but will only become a master teacher when he or she gains a passion for the act and the art and science of teaching. This leads the teacher to acquire methods, techniques and skills that will lead to successful transmitting of knowledge to all learners that he/she will teach. • The Need for Academic Competence is certain and vital to effective teaching. One cant teach what one doesn’t know., however academic knowledge only has value if it leads to learning. And when it comes to learning, this study reveals that passion plays a paramount role. • Role of professional development: Any professional development that causes a teacher to be more passionate in his or her teaching has the probability of making that teacher a more effective teacher, provides support for applying new and varied strategies and techniques in the target content area.

  14. Role of professional development: • Any professional development that causes a teacher to be more passionate in his or her teaching has the probability of making that teacher a more effective teacher, provides support for applying new and varied strategies and techniques in the target content area. • Domain III-Accomplished teacher has the passion for teaching, passion for subject, and persistence to make content based professional development meaningful which leads to higher levels of student learning.

  15. Deep passion for academic content… • There are many people with a deep passion for academic content, but they don’t have a passion for teaching that content. This study shows that subject matter expertise without effective practice has little value where teaching is concerned. We must be careful when hiring new teachers that we don’t focus on their content competency and ignore their passion. • Three compelling questions that a district should ask and answer if we want to produce student to achieve higher levels: • What are we doing to create models for our current teachers to help them put passion into their teaching? • What should we be doing to teach the importance of passion to prospective teachers? • What type of training do our teachers need that would be a better use of our local, state and federal training dollars

  16. Passion Runs a Master Teachers Professional engine: • Passion is what feeds the Master teachers energy, causes them to work diligently, and holds their focus on what they regard as great work and mission of the schools, and keeps them from giving up • What educators do with students in the classroom and school today can affect the whole of students lives. That’s why if teachers do not have a strong passion for the professional work they are doing, it may adversely affect students today and alter their lives.

  17. “only passions, great passions, can elevate the soul to do great things” Denis Diderot
