  1. A Rainforest Animal The Macaw By Achilleas Papadimitriou

  2. General Information There are 17 species of Macaws living in the tropical rainforests. • Some of them have bright colors like redand some have darker oneslike blue, according to their environment • They all have a big powerful beaks used to crack nuts and seeds • They all have big gripping toes with large nails used to grab the branches of the canopy layer. • They travel in large flocks consisting of 10 to 30 birds each. • Their loud squeaks and calls echo through the rainforest.

  3. Defense mechanisms • The macaw’s main defense against potential predators is flight. • Their feathers can detach from their bodies fairly easily, so if a predator does bite them it will get a mouthful of feathers giving the bird enough time to fly away. • It can fend off any predators nearby using it’s sharp claws and enormous beak, but this will occur only if the bird cannot fly away.

  4. Habitat • It manly lives in the Yucatan peninsular and the Amazon rainforest.

  5. Living place In the canopy, perching in a tree branch. By that way any predators will have difficulties tracking the animal. It only abandons the safety of the canopy if it has to search for food.

  6. Diet • Macaws eat a variety of foods including: fruits, palm fruits, nuts, seeds, leaves, flowers and stems • Wild species formulate large flocks form 10-30 birds in average to forage for food over an area of 100km • They can even eat toxic or caustic substances, which they can digest.

  7. Unusual eating habits Many macaws have been spotted in the Amazon basin consuming clay almost on a daily basis. Certain theories are that they eat clay to help them neutralize the toxic substances that they eat. However some researchers disagree claiming that they eat clay because it contains calcium that female macaws use to manufacture eggs.
