VII Cities

This article explores how the adoption of coal as an energy source led to the transformation of cities, including the shift from water power to transportation and labor as key factors for industrial growth. The influx of immigrants, particularly from Southern and Eastern Europe between 1870-1924, also shaped the social fabric of cities. Ethnic neighborhoods and the challenges faced by different immigrant groups are discussed.
