  1. 2016 Spanish Pre-6th Grade

  2. Teacher Introduction V a l s • Senora Forbes • jforbes@stvalentineschool.com • 15 years experience, 9 years at St Valentine • I not only teach Spanish, but run the Academic Development program and lead the Green School Initiative. I am passionate about what I do and enjoy multiple activities. You will see me around the building wearing many hats and after school running Healthy Kids Club and Science Club.

  3. Values rooted in Catholic teachings V a l s • Our faith in Spanish includes learning about the different Saints, learning the names of the virtues in Spanish and how they apply, learning some of the prayers in Spanish, and learning how Catholicism is celebrated in Spanish speaking countries and how it is similar and different to the United States. • Our theme this year is “We Are All Disciples, Following Jesus Together.” • We will keep with this theme and incorporate it into our Spanish classes.

  4. Academic Excellence V a l s • Standards taught in Spanish Preschool- Sixth grades are based on the state World Language Standards combined with our own Spanish curriculum. • Students will learn the Spanish language and culture through activities including but not limited to reading, writing, speaking, listening, and singing. • The detailed Spanish curriculum is broken down by grade level on the St Valentine website • Students are encouraged to study daily to reinforce the vocabulary. This could be through games, flashcards, websites and apps.

  5. Academic Excellence (con’t) V a l s • Student expectations • Students are expected to come to class prepared and ready to learn. Students will be working on an individual and group basis. • Homework is given in Spanish about once a week in grades 3-6. • Grading will be according to the St Valentine grade scale • Missing assignment policy follows that listed in the St Valentine Handbook. 1 missing assignment in homeroom/Spanish will be a warning, 2 missing assignments will be a phone call home, and 3 missing assignments will be a detention. Missing assignments will be graded but they will lose points everyday not handed in.

  6. Love and Respect for All V a l s • Classroom management • Students will treat others as they themselves would want to be treated. They will conduct themselves in a respectful manner at all times. The lower grades will use Class Dojo to track behavior. • Students will come into the Spanish classroom and put their things down and immediately gather at the carpet to start class. • Students will be working both on their own and in groups. • Disrespectful and misbehavior will not be tolerated. A note will go home to indicate any behavior concerns in Spanish.

  7. Love and Respect for All (con’t) V a l s Our Spanish classroom is a positive and caring environment where everyone can learn.

  8. Strong Community in Christ V a ls School to home communication will be done via planners in grades 3-6. If there is an assignment in the lower grades a note will be sent home with them in their everyday folder. If you ever have any questions don’t hesitate to contact me via email or call the office. My email is jforbes@stvalentineschool.com Please note I am the Spanish teacher for Preschool-6th grade. Livonia Shared time teaches Spanish grades 7-8.

  9. Strong Community in Christ (con’t) V a ls • Important dates in Spanish. Project and test dates will be given two weeks in advance and give ample time to study if 10-20 min is spent daily on vocabulary at home. We will do a majority of our Spanish work in class but usually once a week there is written homework. • Miscellaneous With any language if you don’t use it you lose it. Here are some tools that can help at home to study and learn. Duolingo (an app) Quizlet.com where all of Senora Forbes word lists are found. Type “zienjenn” in the search box Onlinefreespanish.com
