  2. ANIMAL CLASSIFICATIONS There are five different group of animals with vertebrates. These classifications are: • Mammals • Fish • Reptiles • Birds • Amphibians

  3. The Bald Eagle’s Animal Classification The Bald Eagle has certain characteristics That make it a bird. Here are some of it’s attributes. • They are warm-blooded. • They have two wings, two legs, and a beak. • Birds give birth to babies hatched from eggs. • Birds breathe through lungs. • Birds are covered with feathers.

  5. Young Eagle’s Appearance Young Bald Eagles have dark beaks and dark fur. Newborn Eagles are called eaglets. They are covered with soft, fuzzy down feathers at first. When they get older they get real feathers. Young Bald Eagles have black beaks. Adults have yellow beaks.

  6. More about Bald Eagles • Bald eagles have really good eye sight. They can spot a fish in the water from two miles up in the air. The bald eagle can live for 35 years. These birds have white feathers on its head and tail. It is NOT bald. The word “bald” meant white a long time ago.

  7. Habitat Bald Eagles live near rivers, lakes or the sea. Bald Eagles live near the sea because they can find their favorite food… fish. Most Bald eagles nest are to 5 feet wide. Sometimes it can be big as 10 feet wide.

  8. Diet Bald Eagles have trouble looking for food. They like fish, but so do people. Bald eagles only like to eat fish that are sick and dying. They leave the healthy fish for us. Bald Eagles also eat snakes, fish, and rabbits or already dead animals.

  9. Enemies A bald eagle’s biggest enemy is people. Farmers used to kill Bald Eagles because they thought Bald Eagles ate farm animals. Eagles like dead or dying animals… not farm animals. Bald Eagles die from pollution. When Bald Eagles grab fish from the water it could have pollution in the fish. That pollution will kill the adults and the eaglets too.

  10. Conclusion • The bald eagle is our national bird. Please help to protect it from pollution by keeping our wastes out of lakes, rivers, and oceans.
