  2. Monroe’s Motivated Sequence • A pattern of organization designed to persuade!! • Sequence – The 5 steps occur in a sequence. • For motivational reasons you must follow the correct order.

  3. Motivated Sequence • FIVE STEPS • Step number one: Attention step • Just like any well-developed speech intro finding a strategy to get your audience’s attention is the first step • Step number two: NEED step • Show the problem: • Answer the question: Why is change needed?

  4. Motivated Sequence • Third Step: SATISFACTION • Describe and explain your solution(s) • Provide evidence to support your position • Show your audience how your belief system and/or the solutions you recommend will satisfy the need/solve the problem

  5. Motivated Sequence • Fourth Step: VISUALIZATION • Describe the benefits of adopting your position to the audience – use both logical and emotional appeals to convince your of the positive benefits • Or develop the consequences of not adopting your position, belief, or proposal • Or share both benefits and consequences • Paint a word picture of the world for the benefits, consequences or both. In adopting your solution

  6. Motivated sequence • Fifth step – This step is often an excellent segue into the conclusion! • CALL FOR ACTION Rally the troops Use specific language choices to ask your audience to committ!

  8. Use the motivated sequence for your speech – THE NEED STEP – Step Three • BODY – label the parts of a speech outline • MAIN IDEAS - • I. Need step – Problem – Write in complete sentences • Ask how many main ideas are needed to develop this step? II. • USE COMPLETE SENTENCES

  9. Satisfaction: STEP Three • III. Show how your belief, proposal or action satisfies the need. What is your solution(s)? • How many main ideas do you need to develop this step?

  10. Visualization Step Four • Visualization step: • III. What are the consequences of not adopting your belief, position, action? • What are the benefits? • Use both logical and emotional appeals

  11. The Action Step: step five • IV. Call for adoption now! Use specific language to motivate your audience to ACT NOW!

  12. What else? • Cite at least three sources as you speak • Develop speech and formal complete sentence outline using supporting details • MLA works cited
