Why is this important? • By providing multiple representations of the content in audio, image AND text, many students, particularly those who have difficulty with language, gain access to learning.
Let’s Get Started • Click on “Create an account” and fill out information (an email will be sent) • Login using the Username and Password, click on “sign in”
To View an Example • Click on Public Library Books • Put a check mark in the “2” on grade level. • Click on the down arrow of the “content area” • Click on “English Language Arts” • Then click “go”.
Click on the “My Favorites” and hit “Go” This will bring up only what you have marked.
Story Board • Goal for your book • Title • What’s on each page • What pictures do you want (Real life or just clip art shots) • Do you want to record the text using “Audacity”
Create & Edit Books • Click on “Create & Edit My Books” • Click on “Start a New Book”
The boxes with the red arrows mean you have to fill out that information. Here is where you choose what the “coaches” will do. You can even put your own picture in as a coach. Keep your Coaches consistent throughout your book.
Once you have all of that information put in you click “save”.
Title page: add content • The first box is for the text • The second box is for the picture or image • The third box is for more text (by Kim Kennedy) • The next two boxes are for sound. • The last box is where you can tell the coaches what to say. • There is also a student response box that you can add to have students give you feedback to prompted questions.
This will be the Title Page of the book. You can change the font size, color and position of the words on the page.
Adding Images to a file • Go into any of the Microsoft products such as PowerPoint, Word, Publisher, or Excel. • Click on “Insert” from the menu at the top of the page • Choose “picture” from “Clip Art” • Type in a subject for what you are looking for: “Butterflies”, i.e.…
Right Click on Picture Click on “Save as Picture” Click on “My Computer” Click on your “I” drive and then click on “Open”
Create a “New Folder” by clicking on this icon. Type in “Book Builder Pictures” then click “OK” Name your picture specifically so that you can remember what it is when you retrieve it. Click on “Save”.
Find an image you would like to use and then right click on the image and click “Save picture as”. Save it where you saved your other pictures. Click “save”.
Back to Book Builder • Click on the “add/edit images” in the second box on the Title Page. • Click on “Browse”
Navigate to the “I” drive through “My Computer” • Click on the folder you created • Click on the picture you want and click “open” • The address get’s put in the “From my computer” box. • Fill out the rest of the information that it asks you for. • Then click “Upload” • Then click “Save”
Sound • Record your book using “Audacity”. • Use Book Builders Media file under Tips and Resources and browse sound files. • Have one of the coaches read the text.
Click the red circle to record and hit the yellow square to stop recording. Click on “Audacity” to open program (teacher tools or in media) Once you have recorded the page text that you want you click “file” then “Export As MP3” Go to the “I” drive and create a new folder that says “Book Builder Sounds” click “ok” .
Go to the title page and click on the “Add/Edit Audio” button • Click “browse” . • Your folder that you created will be under the “I” drive so go to that file and click on the sound that you want • Click “open”. • Then click “upload” then “save”
Click “Preview” at the top of your title page and you will see what you have created.
Go through the same steps to insert text, images and sound to the rest of your pages.
Glossary When you are inserting text you can have more difficult words linked to a dictionary with either a picture or a written definition. To do this you highlight the word(s) you want to be defined or shown as an image and you click on the little book on the tool bar and it will show the “glossary” screen and you can add an “existing definition” or define it later. Make your choice and click “save”.
Making the Glossary Click on “view/edit” next to the word you want to define and then add text or images. Click on the “Edit Glossary” tab
Finishing your Book • On the bottom of the last page of your book click on the “Book Completed” tab.
Publish! • Book Builder runs on both PC’s & Mac’s • Book Builder books can be read online, or downloaded. Going to the book you created and clicking on the “Publish” button, you are letting everyone in the world see it. You can also just choose certain people to share it with as well.
Sharing You can enter your name and then enter emails to those you want to share the book with and click submit.
