  1. WebQuest Template Lisa Kist Science- Process Skills

  2. Process Skills in science are very important to the active learning of science. Science labs that involve hands-on learning are often called active engagement classes due to the behaviors of learning and modeling science skills. Students that learn Process Skills at the beginning of the year will be more successful at completing good quality labs and in general, find these skills useful throughout their lives.  To guide what you will focus on within this webquest,  use the graphic organizer so that you can complete the KWL chart on Science Process Skills.  Fill in only the "K" column and W" column, then glue it into your science notebook. Introduction Keywords: observing, classifying, measuring, hypothesizing/predicting

  3. In this webquestyou will participate in several online investigations.  These investigations are designed to help develop the skills of scientific inquiry and objective experimentation to reach evidence supported conclusions using their results/findings. • At each step you will be introduced to a basic science process skill that you will use to complete your final task. • Observation: http://www.brainpopjr.com/science/scienceskills/makingobservations/preview.weml, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YpcX_zxkbBc • Classification: http://science.discovery.com/tv-shows/greatest-discoveries/videos/100-greatest-discoveries-classification-of-species.htm • Measuring: http://www.funbrain.com/measure/index.html, http://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/ks2/maths/shape_space/measures/play/popup.shtml , http://www.ictgames.com/weight.html, http://www.bgfl.org/bgfl/custom/resources_ftp/client_ftp/ks2/maths/weigh/q4.htm, • Predicting/ Hypohesizing: http://forensics.rice.edu/, you will need to complete the handout notes as you move through the adventure Case 1. If you would like more practice you can work on cases 2-4. • You will need to take your time to learn each of the process skills. You are expected to take notes in your science journal as you move through the webquest. •  Review the handout, “Student Information Sheet,” and read it carefully.  You willuse it as a reference for the video demonstrations.   • You need to write a reflection on each of the process skills to demonstrate your understanding and ability to accomplish that particular skill. Task Overview

  4. Student Worksheet for CSI Case 1-3 and KWL Chart for Notebooks • Observation: http://www.brainpopjr.com/science/scienceskills/makingobservations/preview.weml, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YpcX_zxkbBc • Classification: http://science.discovery.com/tv-shows/greatest-discoveries/videos/100-greatest-discoveries-classification-of-species.htm • Measuring: http://www.funbrain.com/measure/index.html, http://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/ks2/maths/shape_space/measures/play/popup.shtml , http://www.ictgames.com/weight.html, http://www.bgfl.org/bgfl/custom/resources_ftp/client_ftp/ks2/maths/weigh/q4.htm • Predicting/ Hypohesizing: http://forensics.rice.edu/ • Extension: CSI investigation game- use your skills to solve the crime using your science process skills to find clues. (Case2-3 worksheets are available to help you keep track of your data.) http://forensics.rice.edu/ Resources

  5. As we begin our webquest, you will participate in several time learning games and videos. • For each video you will need to take notes on each of the process skills. After the video or game you will need to identify what you think is the main idea and write a 2 dollar sentence with a drawing to represent your understanding of the concept. • The activities that include a teacher provided worksheet will require you to answer all questions carefully with complete details. • Please allow yourself some think time after each activity.  Remember, you are on an adventure as a scientific thinker, so think (reflect) your way through each process.  Process

  6. Evaluation

  7. You Did It! • You learned important science process skills and you are officially ready to take over the scientific world. • You are now ready to engage in all of our science investigations this year.   • Please take a moment and complete the "L"  section of the KWL chart.  This will serve as your summative assessment.   Conclusion

  8. Welcome Teachers!! • This webquest is great for introducing 6-8th grade science students to the process skills they will need to acquire in order for them to be proficient in their lab skills and scientific thinking. • The understanding of process skills can make or break a students lab experiences. Some of the games connected to this webquest have been adjusted based on my students lab and life experiences. I find that many of my students have trouble with measuring with a ruler in both Customary and Metric formats, so the games are at a more basic level to help develop these skills. • The original layout for this webquest borrowed from Ruth Wilson- Ruth.F.Wilson@browardschools.com • . • Teacher Contact Information: Lisa Kist, lisa.kist@tusd1.org Teacher Page
