Netzwerk Teilchenwelt - German Network on Particle Physics Education and Outreach

Netzwerk Teilchenwelt is a German network funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research. We work with students, teachers, and scientists to bring modern research in particle and astroparticle physics to the classroom. Our programs include basic introductions, qualification projects, workshops at CERN, and research projects at research institutes. With activities such as national masterclasses and research projects, we aim to improve communication skills and promote interest in physics education.

  1. Netzwerk Teilchenwelt = Network Particle World A German Network on ParticlePhysicseducationandoutreach fundedby the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research1.1.2010 – 31.1. 2013 2nd IPPOG Meeting, Michael Kobel

  2. Weare… … a German Network of • scientists • (astro-)particlephysics • students • aged 15-19 • teachers/trainers • atschools, schoollabs, sciencecentres etc. • in direkt contactto CERN

  3. We .. • workwithstudents AND teachers to bring modern researchtothe classroom • offerprograms in particlephysics AND astroparticlephysics • offeryoungscientiststhechancesandknowledgetoimprovecommunicationskills

  4. OurConcept • 4 programmlevels • Basic introduction in particlephysics • Qualificationparticipantsorganizeownprojects • Deepeningtheexperience- workshopsat CERN • Research projectsatresearchinstitutes • 4 centralelements • localprojectsall over Germany throughouttheyear • workshopsat CERN • design ofcontextmaterials • scientificevaluation students AND teachers particlephysics- andcosmic-projects

  5. Activities2010 / 2011 / 2012 teachers/trainers students Research projects CERN Qualification Basic Progamm

  6. activities: National Masterclasses what: about 120 „national masterclasses“ a year where: mostly in schools, also schoollabs, fairs, exhibitions how: 4-5 hrs, one talk, measurements, quiz, novideoconf supervision: mostly PHD-students, assistedbystudents (school) andteachers (materials in design anddevelopment) group: about 20 students data: LHC/LEP-measurements National Masterclass in Lenggries (MPI München)

  7. what: 20 „basicintroductorydays“, 30 „projectweeks“, ~5 researchprojects a year how: „Scintillatorexperiment“, usingQuarknet DAQ card„Kamiokanne“ Web-experiments (Trigger Hodoskop, polar ship) mainlyacitivities in „qualification“ and „research“ stage Students: projectweek (1-2weeks) Teachers: teachersdays supervision: mostly PHD-studentsandteachers activities: cosmic-project*(DESY Zeuthen) DAQ-card Szintillator Photomultiplier *since Dez. 2010

  8. activities: „qualification“ stage Students: „spreadingtheirknowledge to others“ tutor in masterclasses, cosmic-experiments talksaboutparticlephysicsatschool guides in exhibitions; helpwithoutreach-activities … evenholding a masterclassthemselves Teachers: „organizingparticlephysicsprojects“ organisingmasterclasses, cosmic-projects preparationofmasterclasses …

  9. acitvities: CERN-workshopsandprojectweeks(CERN, partiallywith German Teachers Program) students: 60 participants in twoworkshops a year (3 days) 10 participants in projectweeks(ownresearchprojects) teachers: 60 participants in twoworkshops (5 days) CERN-Workshops are a bigmotivationforacitivities in the „qualificationstage“ andveryeffectivetrainingforteachersin modern physics

  10. acitivities: researchprojects Students: researchprojectsfor 3-10 months(particlephysics/astroparticlephysics) oftenpartof final schoolexaminations work on ownmeasurements Tutors: PHD-studentsandseniorphysicistsatuniversitiesandteachers teachers: planning: researchprojects in (astro-)particlephysicsanddidactics currentproblem: lack of physicsteachers in German schools(nochanceforsabbatical)
