  2. About The Park • Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park was • established in 1916 on the island of • Hawai’i • Includes Kilauea, one of the worlds most • active volcanoes, and Mauna Loa, the • worlds most massive volcano • The park has also been designated as an • International Biosphere Reserve (1980) • and a World Heritage Site (1987)

  3. History of the the Park • Kilauea is considered to be the home of • the goddess Pele to whom Hawaiians • paid their respects to. • The first western visitors to the site were • missionary William Ellis and American Asa • Thurston in 1823 • It became a tourist attraction in the • 1840’s and the idea to make it a national • park was proposed in 1903

  4. Becoming a National Park • After the idea to make it a national park in • 1903, editorials printed by AsaThurstons’ • grandson, Lorrin Thurston, were in favor of • the park idea. • In 1907 and 1909 congressional delegations • visited the proposed park and in 1911, • governor Walter Frear proposed a bill to • create Kilauea National Park for $50,000. • After several attempts, the legislation passed • and was signed by Woodrow Wilson on • August 1, 1916.

  5. Mauna Loa and Kilauea • Mauna Loa is the largest volcano on • earth and is very active with it’s last • eruption on March 24, 1984 and • previous eruptions in 1926 and 1950. • Kilauea is considered the most active • volcano in the world and has been • continuously spewing lava since 1983. • Kilauea had it’s last violent eruption 2 • years ago which scattered debris over • 75 acres

  6. Park Climate • The park climate will vary from the rest of the • weather on the island of Hawaii due to high • elevation and volcanoes. • At the highest elevation of Kilauea (4000 ft.), • temperatures are usually around 15 degrees cooler • than at sea level. • The presence of volcanoes also emits a poisonous • sulfur dioxide gas that, in high amounts, is • dangerous. • At the top of Mauna Loa (13,677 ft.) temperatures • may average around 0 degrees Celsius.

  7. Park Nature and Wildlife • Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is • home to diverse wildlife due to it’s • geographically isolated position. • Animals- Nene, Hawaiian hawks, bats, • and short eared owls, Hawksbill turtle, • Monk seal • Plants- 15 species of endangered trees, • silverswords, various ferns
