  3. The Voice in Delivery • Your voice should express who you are and engage listeners.

  4. Volume • Volume: the relative loudness of a speaker’s voice. • Loudness depends on: • Size of room/number of people • Availability of a microphone • Background noise

  5. Pitch • Pitch: the range of sounds from high to low. • Conveys mood • Reveals level of enthusiasm • Expresses concern for the audience • Signals your overall commitment to the occasion

  6. Rate • Speaking rate: the speed with which a speaker talks. • Goal: vary the speaking rate.

  7. Rate • Most public speeches are delivered at about 120 words per minute.

  8. Pauses • Pauses: enhance meaning by providing: • Punctuation • Emphasis of a point • Time to draw attention to a key point • A moment for listeners to contemplate

  9. Pauses • Use pauses instead of vocal fillers, or unnecessary and undesirable phrases such as “you know,” and “it’s like.”

  10. Vocal Variety • Vocal variety refers to the way that volume, pitch, rate, and pauses work together to create effective delivery.

  11. Pronunciation and Articulation • Pronunciation: the correct formation of word sounds • Articulation: clarity or forcefulness with which sounds are made • Cultural differences exist.
