Dr. Nikroo received his Ph.D. in condensed matter physics from University of California, Santa Barbara in 1990. He joined General Atomics (GA) in 1991, initially performing laser spectroscopy research in GA’s Institute for Advanced Studies. He joined GA’s IFT division in 1995, where he has played a critical role in development of materials and metrology techniques for targets for the Inertial Confinement Fusion (ICF) program. In 2005, he became the Deputy for National Ignition Campaign’s Integrated Target System for the National Ignition Facility (NIF). In this capacity, he led a team composed of scientists and engineers from both GA and Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) in development and fabrication of many of the critical NIF target components such as capsules and hohlraums involving beryllium and uranium, respectively. Nikroo received the Fusion Power Associates Excellence in Fusion Engineering Award in 2003 and has served as the director of GA’s IFT division since 2009.

The FTSC approved the following: "The IEEE NPSS Fusion Technology Committee believes that an agreement between IEEE and ANS to discount annual membership fees for ANS members (with reciprocal discounts by ANS for NPSS members) should be considered by the NPSS. If both ANS and IEEE agree in principle to this arrangement, then details will be elaborated in future discussions.” • ANS FED is bringing a similar motion to ANS. • May result in new members for IEEE and NPSS

  11. year-end summary • No recent changes to the Fusion Technology Standing Committee – All 2012 FTSC meeting minutes appended to the written report. • FTSC nominates a new chair for consideration of the NPSS president. • Jean Paul Allain, Purdue University • Gov’t agency participation limits not an issue for SOFE, but some institutions require an early attendance request that will limit late deciders. • 2012 FTC award was made and will be announced in the next NPSS newsletter • Wayne Meier provided updates on SOFE2013. • Invitations for plenary and invited talks almost ready • Pursuing contributions from AESJ and others • SOFE2013 requested a special issue of TPS Technical Program chair arranging for four guest editors. • Jean Paul Allain provided updates of SOFE2015. • Venue arrangements completed • Selecting technical program chair and committee • Committee endorsed ANS effort to investigate reduced membership rates for dual members. • Thank you NPSS for your collegiality and hospitality from the exiting FTC chair.
