Syllabus(Course / Instructors / Location) Women in the Workplace Offered by the Office of Women’s Support State of Indiana 402 West Washington Street, Room E230 Indianapolis, Indiana 46204 • Course Instructor: Dr. Justin Miller and Dr. Anita Adams with special sessions provided by Dr. Brittany Temme and Dr. Art Hill • All instructors represent a wealth of knowledge and background in providing support and assistance to women of all social and economic statuses through offering workplace programming for various topics. • Course Location: Classes will be held in the Indiana Government Center South, Conference Room 16. The conference center is located on the first floor of the building, toward the center of the building.

Syllabus(Course Description/ Course Objectives) • Course Description: Women in the Workplace is designed to provide women with the knowledge and support to assist them through their professional and personal journeys. While this course focuses on professional success including topics of leadership and professional relationships, the Office of Women’s Support provides information and support on most any topic of interest to women. The course will take you on a journey of investigating leadership strategies as well as developing professional relationships. • Course Objectives: The objectives of this course are to prepare women to seek opportunities for leadership within their organization and obtain the tools to be successful leaders as well as giving women some knowledge and tools to assist them in forming successful professional relationships.

  11. Syllabus(Course Policies/ Course Structure) • Course Policies: While participation in this course is voluntary, it may be used as a resource for your professional development path. At times this course may be recommended by a supervisor or human resource department. Therefore, participation in this course will be disclosed to your agency’s human resource department. However, if you participate in this course on a strictly voluntary basis and wish information related to this course be kept confidential please indicate so upon course registration. This course will include some in-class and out-of-class activities and assignments. In-class assignments will be completed within class time and reviewed within the class. Out-of-class assignments will be reviewed during class time. Assignments will not be collected for a grade but you may be asked to discuss or present your assignment to the class. • Course Structure: This course will meet on a weekly basis for six-weeks. There will be activities and assignments in and out of class. Class activities might include role-playing or discussion sessions. There will be weekly research and/or reading assignments. This course is an in-person course that meets in the workplace on a regular basis for a six-week period. There are online resources available mirroring the content of this course however following a slightly different curriculum and syllabus. Please consult the website for additional information about online resources.

  12. Syllabus(Course Materials) • Course Materials: This course will utilize many materials including books, websites, and other literature sources. A workbook will be handed out the first week of class.   13. Syllabus(Course Schedule) • Course Schedule: This course is a six-week course. Classes will be held every Wednesday beginning May 16, 2012 and concluding June 20, 2012. Classes will last for two hours. If you are unable to attend a session, please notify an instructor beforehand so arrange can be made that will allow you to stay in tune. • Wednesday, May 16, 2012 – class introductions; pre-test; get-to-know each other activities; background information on women in leadership; assignment for next session – locate at least two articles about women’s leadership styles to discuss during next class • Wednesday, May 23, 2012 – class discussion based on last week’s assignment; guest professor lecture and discussion; assignment for next session – complete first three chapters of workbook • Wednesday, May 30, 2012 – class discussion based on last week’s assignment; group activity focused on leadership traits; assignment for next session – complete chapters 4-6 in workbook • Wednesday, June 6, 2012 – class discussion based on last week’s assignment; guest professor lecture and discussion; assignment for next session – complete chapters 7-9 in workbook • Wednesday, June 13, 2012 – class discussion based on last week’s assignment; group activity focused on professional relationships; assignment for next session – complete chapters 10-12 in workbook • Wednesday, June 20, 2012 – class discussion based on last week’s assignment; group activities focused on professional relationships; post-test; course completion discussion

Syllabus(Grading Criteria) • Grading Criteria and Standards: The course will be a total of 100 points based on the following. • Week 1: 20 points = 10 points for discussion participation, 10 points for book assignment • Week 2: 20 points = 10 points for discussion participation, 10 points for book assignment • Week 3: 20 points = 10 points for discussion participation, 10 points for book assignment • Week 4: 20 points = 10 points for discussion participation, 10 points for book assignment • Week 5: 20 points = 10 points for discussion participation, 10 points for book assignment • Week 6: 20 points = 10 points for discussion participation, 10 points for book assignment

  15. Syllabus(Course Evaluation) • Course Evaluation: Participants will complete a pre-test and a post-test. The pre-test will be taken during the first class meeting to gauge the current knowledge base. The post-test will be taken during the last class meeting to gauge what participants have learned during the six-week course. Participants will be asked to complete a course evaluation at the end of the course. Participants will receive a follow-up survey 3 months after course completion and another follow-up survey at 9 months after course completion. Participants who complete the 3 month and 9 month follow-up surveys will be entered into a drawing for a $50.00 gas card.
