  1. Water/Sewage Distribution Network Management through GIS ( Geographical Information System ) ISMAIL SYED SHAMSUDDIN, TECHNICAL & MARKETING MANAGER STAR ME, Saudi Arabia www.starme.com.sa

  2. TABLE OF CONTENTS • Objectives • Goals • Methods Adopted • Various Stages Implemented • Systems Developed • Summary

  3. Objectives • Qassim, Riyadh Water and Sewage Authority Managing the Utility Networks • Qassim Located at the heart of the country, and almost in the center of the Arabian Peninsula. It has a population of 1,016,756 and an area of 65,000 km². • To Provide Effective and Efficient services of Water and Sewage Facilities to the community

  4. Goals • Design Single platform contains three applications Integrated as Enterprise Solution (water – sewage – city management ) • Transferring the paper maps ( Old into digital platform • Linking the Various Sections data together ( Graphic & Database ) • Information exchange between the Various departments without replicated the data • The coordination of the work between operation maintenance ,engineering others • Saving the time and producing the effective results • Good analysis for the spatial data and non spatial data • The support for the strategic and management decisions • The Improvement of the Operation process that done by the companies and Contractors • Introducing better services for the community

  5. Various Stages Implemented The first stage : Collecting and preparing the data of the project through contractors • Collecting of the text data that is existing in paper ( as built ) , Office Suite Softwares . • Design a unified data base by using oracle 10g • Transfer the drawing elements to STAR GIS systems • Transfer the text data and input it in Oracle DB • The execution of (QC & QA) for these data to getting the better accuracy • Execution of cleaning & topology for the drawing elements • Performing additional processing and improving for data base tables and coordinating the relationship between them

  6. System Execution Stages The second stage : Design a platform for system as required • Design a platform for the applications ( City Management – Sewage – Water ) • Activating of Rule-Base commands to prevent user errors through the dealing • With system • Design a special programming codes for the automatically calculations inside platforms • Performing of all required analysis to insert it in the special platform in the system • Activating of the user profile properties

  7. System Execution Stages The Third Stage : Testing of all commands of the system • Software Testing If there is any error in system , it is fixed by the developers in R & D division • After the checking every thing is OK ,the system is delivered to the users The Fourth Stage : Delivering the system for the water & sewage authority • In this stage , the system is delivered and trained to water & sewage authority to starting the operation cycle

  8. Users Friendly Interface Adopted In accordance to the users Privileges AQUA Layout AQUA Analysis • Creation of different analysis • Create longitudinal section for pipes automatically • Determine the direction of wastewater y • Complete support for Arabic language • Administrate the Different Features • The control of Adding , Removal , Linking elements with DB Oracle • Complete support for Arabic language

  9. Sewage (wastewater) Application Sewage Network • Management of Sewage Network Features Inspection Chamber Manholes SP Cement Welds SP Y connections Pipe Lines Sewer Pump Station

  10. Water Application Water Application • Management of Sewage Network Features Fire Hydrant Water Meter Water Special Pieces Special Pieces Water Valve Chamber Valve Chamber Water Valve Water Pipe Lines Water Pump Station Pump Station

  11. City Management Application City Management along with Water/Sewage Applications Base Map Control point District Land use Photo Road CL Road local Road TK 350 School • Social Service • Squares • Text Arabic • Text English • Utility point • Government buildings • Land Mark • Medical • Mosques

  12. Performing the Analysis of Day-Day Business Operation These Operations are helping the users and the community to answer their about the parts of the networks and assist in planning decision-making process of scientific methods (methods of various strategic and tactical ) • Query >All Applications < • Charts Statistic Study >All Applications < • Buffer Zone >All Applications < • Spatial Analyses >All Applications < • Thematic Study >All Applications < • Longitude Cross Section > Sewage Application< • (Flow Direction)>Sewage Application < • Follow Water Network >Water Application < • Routing >City Management Application <

  13. Query Search tool (searching about parts of the network) based on different criteria and presentation of the form • Querying Branch Line , Main line • The possibility to query about pipe lines that executed by certain contractor • The possibility to query about a manhole Depending on the number of inlets • The possibility to query about a manhole Depending on the diameter • The possibility to query about the pipe lines that connected to A particular pumping station and Many more The possibility to query about the pipe lines that connected to A particular pumping station

  14. Charts(Statistic Study) Statistical Studies is a statistical analysis of digital data helps the user to have access to diagrams for scientific accuracy in the analysis of the data difficult to obtain manually Proportion of each contractor to find an outlet for the sewage system pipes

  15. Buffer Zone Analytical studies for the analysis of particular parts of the network to locate sewage network locations to help determine the location of the new ones The possibility of identifying parts of the network after 300 meters from the pumping stations

  16. Spatial Analysis Spatial Analysis An examination of (integration) layers of the network with each other to find a relationship between them The possibility of analyzing the network layer of water that locating on districts layer (Khaleej district )

  17. 500mm DI 200mm UPVC PE 1400mm Thematic Study The possibility of showing pipes lines of different colors depending on pipe line material (AC,UPVC,ACP,DI,GRP,PE) The possibility of showing pipes lines of different colors depending on the Contractors and Diameters (200,300,400,450,500,700

  18. Engineering Application Integration Cross Section Longitudinal Cross Section : Tool to determine levels of natural ground level and the bottom line

  19. إتجاة سريان مياه الصرف (Flow Direction) Flow Direction : Tool to determine the direction of the entry into force of the sewage with the report to show errors, if any,

  20. Routing This analysis is used to identify and determine the shortest road route with a route to show report

  21. Programs can be incorporated in the future with programs Programs can be incorporated in the future with AQUA STAR • WaterCAD(Analysis of water quality, water flow analysis, analysis of the hydraulic network ) • SewerCAD(The establishment of models of hydraulic analysis, water pressure, the analysis of the forces of gravity and pressure ) • Piccolo (Way for the establishment of a comprehensive application of geographical parts of the network through the visual effects ) • Porteau (Study to improve the performance of water supply to consumer pressure required ) • EDM (Electronic Document Management

  22. Summary • Sustainable Growth of the Water/Sewage Networks is Maintained by Designing, Installing and Maintaining the Infrastructure more precisely • More Efficient and Effective of services to the Community • Achieving a pragmatic & systematic approach in resolving the challenges .
