  8. Gutkha • How is it used: held in the mouth and chewed. Saliva is generally spit out, but sometimes swallowed. • Effects: The increased risk of cancer of gums, throat, lungs, liver, stomach and even prostate, is probably the most serious side effect of this product.

  11. Hookah smokers may actually inhale more tobacco smoke than cigarette smokers. Some reports say the equivalent of 200 cigarettes. • The smoke produced from a single pipe contains approximately the same amount of carbon monoxide, nicotine and tar equivalent to 20 cigarettes. • Shisha use has serious health consequences on the lungs and heart, low birth weight, precipitation of asthma attacks and pneumonia. • The common belief is that smoke is filtered by the water when in actual fact, nicotine is not water-soluble. The water filter is a gimmick. Since the smoke is ‘cooled’ by the water pipe, it is also possible to inhale the smoke more deeply into the lungs. • Shisha smoke retained all the carcinogens of cigarette smoke while adding more carbon monoxide and a separate set of carcinogens from the use of burning coals. • Risk of infection with tuberculosis or hepatitis.
