  2. What is Ecological Niche ? • Ecological Niche is the role that each species plays in its environment ( affecting its survival as a species )

  3. Parameters of a Niche. • An organisms life history. • Habitat. • Place in the food chain. • Geographic Range.

  4. ECOLOGICAL NICHE: EXTINCTION OF DINOSAURS ! The mass extinction of dinosaurs may have led the way for mammals to expand into the dinosaurs niches.

  5. White Pine Tree at Yellow Stone and its Not so Friendly Guest. • The White Pine is a host to the Mountain Pine Beetle. • The mountain pine beetle, belongs to the bark beetle family, that must kill their host to reproduce. • The Pine beetle invades the bark of the tree so that the tree dies from inside out.

  6. The Effects of Global Warming. • Climate and weather play a role in the number of mountain pine beetles. • The seasonal weather of the high mountains protected the White Bark Pine from beetles.

  7. GLOBAL WARMING Continued … • Due to global warming, the winter temperatures have increased allowing the beetle to survive. • After the beetle has invaded , the tree turns red.

  8. White Bark Pine Ecosystem. • White Bark Pine is a tree that plays a big role in the ecosystem. • It provides seeds which are a major food source for animals. • The mass destruction of these white pines will affect the animals that depend on them for survival. • This effects the ecological niche of many animals.

  10. DID YOU KNOW ? • Not more than ONE species can occupy the same niche. • Every year the pine tree invasion increases due to global warming. • When a beetle invades a tree, it leaves it red. Scientists use this as an ecological indicator to show the rapid change every year.
