Global Engineering Professional Seminar ME 290 Agenda Week 10: March 22, 2012 Quiz this week: 10 questions, 2 Chapters--China and India Take Cultural Center assignment (blue) from attendance folders. Profiles—for EARLY bonus points, place in attendance folders. Profiles DUE next week, Week 11. Purdue ME’s in China: contact info posted on MECOM “Assignments:—& Video, application deadline for 2013 program: April 30, 2012.

  2. Profile: Professional Opportunity • Way to discover what you really have to offer! • 50% completion of BSME • Credentials—courses, projects, activities • Capabilities—illustrated with extended examples, evidence!

  3. The Profile Package • About 1000 words • Two pages, single-spaced, formal report format • Title, headings (3 minimum), subheads, page numbers, etc. • open line between paragraphs • Perfection!

  4. What’s inside? • The answer to the interview question, “Tell me about yourself!” • Timeline: present, then past and future! • Begin with present—”Who are you?” • “context”—an introduction, e.g., current status as a sophomore in the Purdue BSME program

  5. What else…. • The past • Only those elements that relate to where you are going in the future! • Examples: reasons why you have chosen the profession of engineering, examples of character or strengths • Your character and passions—Example—Jack Welch, “a punk,” said his mother…

  6. And, in conclusion…. • Future • Where are you headed? • Show literacy! • Technical vocabulary, specifics • Show passion! • Strong words…”determined to….”

  7. Tell a story… • Describe the way you “discovered” engineering? • Tell about the beginning, the middle, and the end of a technical project? • Talk about how you learned an important lesson about life, about learning, about engineering, about success? • Reference: Harvard Business Review, “Telling Tales” (on website)

  8. Show evidence--specific! • I joined the Purdue Habitat for Humanity Campus Chapter… Beginning with my first work trip, I developed a passion for volunteerism…  Overall, I estimate that in the past four years I have volunteered more than 700 hours . •  To relate to my German co-workers… I rented an apartment in the city center…

  9. Professional engineering--Look forward to challenges… • Examine the National Academy of Engineering’s “Grand Challenges”

  10. “Professional Profiles” provide: • Identity—who you are…as a professional engineer in a particular time and place • Opportunity space—what is held in common with reader/audience/site visitor, what is the transactional/collaborative potential? • Action—what is a strategic approach to going forward?

  11. The Global Professional Profile A document that conveys the current identity of a mechanical engineer in training who has particular technical interests and the intention to become a contributing professional in a world that is increasingly interdependent and where major challenges are emerging.

  12. Profile content useful: 1.Cover letters 2. Interviews 3. Scholarship applications 4. “Statement of Purpose” for graduate school 5. Career planning 6. Posted on NSF’s GlobalHub
