  9. “Hi, my name is Luke! In school I’m learning about hygiene. HYGIENE is a word that means cleanliness, or keeping clean. Follow me as I learn more about taking care of my body.

  10. Luke wakes up in the morning and runs downstairs to breakfast. His mother looks and him and sighs. “Luke, you need to take a bath.” Luke groans… “Awww Mom, why?” “Because Luke,” his mother says, “washing your hair and your body is important. If you don’t bathe, you’ll look and feel dirty. You may even start to smell... You don’t want that do you?” “Ewwww, no!” Luke laughs and wrinkles his nose. “You’re right Mom. Maybe I should take a bath...”

  11. It’s lunchtime. Luke runs in and grabs a seat at the table. Luke’s mom puts her hands out and asks, “Have you washed your hands young man?” Luke groans… “Moooooooom, do I have to?” She sighs and replies, “Luke, washing your hands is important because it keeps you from getting sick. You need to wash with soap and warm water for at least 30 seconds in order to kill all the germs and bacteria you pick up and carry around with you. After you use the bathroom, when you sneeze, and before you eat are extra important times to wash your hands.” “I guess I don’t want to get sick. I had better wash my hands,” Luke says.

  12. After school at Matt’s house, Matt’s mom puts sunscreen on his face and arms before he goes outside to play. Luke is curious. Luke asks, “Why are you putting sunscreen on Matt, Mrs. Paige? We won’t be out too long.” Mrs. Paige explains, “Any time in the sun is time you need to wear sunscreen, Luke. It is important because it protects you from harmful UV rays that damage your skin. Too much time in the sun unprotected can cause sunburn and maybe even skin cancer.” “Sunburn hurts, and skin cancer sounds scary. Can I have some sunscreen too, Mrs. Paige?” Luke asks.

  13. Its bedtime and Luke is in the bathroom brushing his teeth. Luke’s mom walks by and stops in the doorway. She shakes her head and smiles. “Well it looks as if someone knows something about hygiene after all,” she says. Luke smiles and replies, “In class today we learned about brushing our teeth. Did you know that you’re supposed to brush for at least 2 minutes twice a day in order to clean build up called plaque off your teeth? If you don’t, you could get cavities!” “Wow Luke, I’m impressed.” Luke’s mom says. “You DO know how to take care of yourself… Just don’t forget to floss!”

  14. Did you know… The ancient egyptians knew all about taking care of their teeth. They made some of the first tooth brushes from twigs and leaves!

  15. “Hi, my name is Heather! In school I’ve been learning about exercising and eating right. Follow me as I learn more about staying active and taking care of my body.

  16. Heather wakes up and runs downstairs into the kitchen. She sees she has two choices for breakfast: Chocolate Flakes or Oatmeal? As she reaches for the Chocolate Flakes, her dad walks into the room. Noticing her choice, he asks, “Aren’t you trying to eat healthier, Heather?” “Yes Dad, I am.” Heather replies. “Why do you ask?” Her dad explains, “Chocolate Flakes are not a good choice. Look at the nutrition facts on the side of the box. There are 18 grams of sugar in this cereal. That’s A LOT! Oatmeal has only 5 grams of sugar and is full of fiber, which is very good for you.” “I see,” Heather says, “So oatmeal is the healthier choice.”

  17. Heather gets to school and remembers she has music class on the third floor. She can take the stairs or the elevator to get there, but one is the healthier choice. As she heads towards the stairs, her friend Amanda asks, “Why aren’t you taking the elevator? Its easier.” Heather replies, “Taking the stairs burns more calories and gets me moving. In the elevator I stand still and don’t use any energy. This is the better choice.” “Oh yeah,” Amanda says, “I remember learning about burning calories in health class. My teacher said its important to get active in some way everyday. I think I’ll take the stairs with you.”

  18. Heather comes home from school and sees a plate of fresh baked sugar cookies on the kitchen counter. She grabs the plate and heads for the fridge to get some milk. Just as she sits down to enjoy her snack, her dad walks in and sits down beside her. “Heather, I’m glad you’re drinking milk with your snack,” he says. “But that is a lot of cookies. Do you really need to eat that many?” Heather looks at the plate full of cookies. She remembered her health teacher talking about moderation. Moderation means eating the things you like, but eating less of them because they aren’t as healthy. Heather took two cookies and passed the plate to her dad. “I guess you’re right, Dad. Two is enough. I don’t need ALL of these.”

  19. Did you know… Milk is full of calcium, a mineral your body needs to build strong bones and teeth.

  20. Review the Information

  21. Let’s review what Heather has learned… • Some foods, like cereal, have lots of sugar and should be avoided. • Oatmeal has lots of fiber, which our bodies need. • Activities like taking the stairs get your body moving and burn calories. • Burning calories is important, so get up and get active in some way everyday. • Moderation means eating less of the things we like that aren’t as good for us. • You can still eat things like cookies as long as you don’t over do it.
