  6. Creation of UN Women In an historic move, the United Nations General Assembly voted unanimously on July 2nd, 2010 to create a new entity to accelerate progress in meeting the needs of women and girls worldwide. Why focus on gender issues?

  7. Higher prevalence of blindness among women What is # 1gender issue in Eye care? • Nearly two-thirds of blind people worldwide are women & girls. • In many places, men have twice the access to eye care as women.

It was estimated last year that, “blindness and severe visual impairment from cataract could be reduced by around 11% in low- and middle-income countries if women were to receive cataract surgery at the same rate as men In some settings women less likely to receive an IOL.   11. What are the linkages between gender inequalities and blindness? 1- Different risk for acquiring eye diseases • Care of young children can result in repeated exposures to infections (Trichiasis). • Inappropriate hygiene practices from limited access to clean domestic water.

  12. 2- Unequal utilization of eye care services Lower levels of health literacy in women affects recognition of symptoms requiring care & leads to fear of negative outcomes. Distance to services: more women are restricted in mobility. What are the linkages between gender inequalities and blindness?

  13. Women at certain areas are less exposed to outside community hence have less Knowledge of available service. • Perceived self “value” : Fear of being burden on family

  14. Simple Strategies to Eliminate Gender Inequity • Acknowledge the problem. • Research to explain “how big”, “why”? • Document the evidence. • Generate interest groups to test strategies. • Build a coalition of professionals and organisations to map out “what next”.
