Arranged Marriages • In 2006 95% of marriages in India were arranged. • An arranged marriage is when the parents choose the child’s spouse. • Many girls in India get married at a very young age. • Some parents of the girls want to get rid of them, so they start looking for a husband when the daughter may be possibly as young as 8 years. • Many girls are married so early because in some areas of India, they will not be able to find a husband if they are older. • On the day of the marriage, some women see their husbands for the first time.

  3. Dowry • Dowry (also known as Dahej)  is the payment of cash or/and belongings (livestock, jewelry, etc.) from the bride's family to the groom' s family. • An article appearing in the New York Times in 2003 told of the fact that dowries are now prohibited , but the practice is still very much alive.
