  2. Prayers, Saints and Feasts Our key learning points for this unit are: Year R: Explore how the family helps us get to know God throughprayer. Explore the role of Mary in the life of Jesus. Year 1: Explore the purpose of prayer. Introduce the liturgical calendar. Examine how saints help us to get to know God. Year 2: Extend the knowledge of the life of Mary and Jesus through prayer (the Rosary) and Scripture. Explore the lives of some saints who responded to the call of Jesus. Year 3: Explore peace and forgiveness, expressed both by Jesus and in the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Examine the life of St Francis of Assisi and his prayer for peace. Year 4: Explorethe prayer life of Jesus as he grew up in the Jewish faith and how he taught his followers to pray. Reflect on the importance of prayers to Mary in the life of the Church and research the history of the Rosary. Year 5: The work of Jesus is continued through us as illustrated in the prayer of St Teresa of Avila. Examine the concept of pilgrimage as a journey of prayer. Year 6: Explorethe concept of heaven and the Church’s belief in Mary and the feasts celebrated in her honour. Look at what heaven is like.Look at lives of the saints and the practice of praying for the dead.
